Tobacco retailers defend training policies for staff

Following a CTV News hidden camera investigation, the owner of a local business is defending his tobacco sale policy – and says it works.
“We I.D. every customer who looks under 18,” Store owner Inder Minhas said. His is the type of policy Action on Smoking and Health is pushing to become legislation. The tobacco control organization has been collecting data through compliance tests carried out in five major cities in Alberta – and found two-thirds of retailers were willing to sell tobacco products to a minor, even after checking for I.D.

MANSFIELD — Eight businesses sold tobacco products or alcoholic beverages to underage customers during a compliance check Monday night.The METRICH Enforcement Unit, Mansfield police, Richland County sheriff’s deputies and Community Action for Capable Youth teamed up for the operation on the eve of graduation season. High school students and adults younger than 21 went to 44 businesses in Mansfield and Richland County. Each employee who illegally sold alcohol or tobacco was cited and will have to appear in municipal court.
