smoking in public place
PMFTC Inc., a venture between Philip Morris and Fortune Tobacco, yesterday lashed out at a directive of the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) banning cigarette smoking in public places beginning July 1.

PMMFTC said the ban is inconsistent with the provisions of a law which prescribed the areas where smoking is allowed. PMFTC also questioned the authority of the MMDA to issue such a regulation. Chris Nelson, managing director of PMFTC, said the MMDA needs to publish and clarify its ordinance, especially as it relates to the Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003, which specifically allowed “smoking in public places” under Section 5. The section further defines what these public places are. Ream more »

Federal Judge Stops NYC from Requiring Grisfy Pictures Where Tobacco Sold

Tobacco Sold
Federal Judge Jed Rakoff of the U.S. District Court in Manhattan has held that the New York City Health Department cannot adopt a rule which would require that gruesome photographs of smokers suffering from various forms of cancer be placed beside cash registers in more than 11,000 bodegas and convenience stores in the city. “Even merchants of morbidity are entitled to the full protection of the law, for our sake as well as theirs,” the judge ruled — although he agreed with the harm of tobacco, noting, “Within New York City, roughly 7,500 people die from smoking annually — more than from AIDS, homicide and suicide combined.”

New FDA Regulations on tobacco a good idea

Regulations on tobacco

When I first heard about the Food and Drug Administration’s new proposed changes to cigarette packs, I was appalled. The changes involve covering the top half of cigarette packs with pictures of diseased lungs and corpses. That’s right: pictures of actual corpses.

Regulate indoor smoking
I would like to clarify that Smokefree Natrona County is not campaigning to “ban” smoking. We have asked the Board of Health to regulate smoking, in all indoor work environments in Natrona County. We are not asking anyone to quit smoking — that is a choice that should be left up to an individual. Ream more »
