Two tobacco products free of FDA oversight

How dissolvable tobacco products are made could determine whether or not they fall under the jurisdiction of the Food and Drug Administration.

Star Scientific Inc., a maker of dissolvable tobacco lozenges, announced Wednesday that it received an FDA notice saying that two of its products are not subject to regulations in the federal Food Drug & Cosmetic Act.

Southborough – Teen smoking is a bad thing. We all know it. And Southborough is taking another step to prevent it.
The Southborough Board of Health held a public hearing on a proposed ban on the sale of all tobacco products in Southborough pharmacies Dec. 15. The Board of Health members: Dr. Louis Fazen (Chair), nurses Nancy Sacco and Mary Lou Woodford and Public Health Director Paul Pisinski oversee the office’s daily activities.

FDA must review new, changed tobacco products

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday issued guidelines to the tobacco industry that could lead to some newer cigarettes, smokeless tobacco and roll-your-own tobacco products being removed from the market and prevent others from being introduced, if the FDA determines their ingredients and design encourage non-users to start using tobacco or make it more difficult for users to quit.

Plans are afoot to reduce the tobacco production in Sri Lanka by 5% per year starting 2011, said Chairman of the National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol, Prof Carlo Fonseka.
Addressing a media awareness workshop on reporting drug-related matters he said that this plan will be implemented from next year as per a request from the Buddhist clergy.

Supreme Court bans sale of tobacco products in plastic pouches from March 2011

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today ordered a ban on the sale of tobacco products like gutkha and pan masala in plastic pouches from March 2011, while asking the government to conduct a survey on the ill effects of these products within eight weeks.

A bench of justices G S Singhvi and A K Ganguly also asked the manufacturers to explore and decide by March next year on the alternative material for packaging them.
