Tobacco firm moves HC against FDA seizure of products

A company based in Dadra and Nagar Haveli, which manufactures tobacco products has moved the Bombay High Court against the action of seizure of their products by the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) department.

As per the petition filed by Kirti Industries, two trucks belonging to it were stopped and several thousand packets were confiscated by officials. Ream more »

Imported Tobacco Products To Feature Pictorial Warning

From tomorrow all tobacco products, including cigarettes packages, entering Oman and other GCC borders, will bear mandatory pictorial warnings about the harmful impact of tobacco on human health.
The decision, issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on March 18, 2012, comes into effect from August 9 and will be simultaneously applied by other GCC members states. Ream more »

Licences of 6 tobacco retailers revoked or suspended

The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) has revoked the licence of one errant tobacco retailer and suspended the licences of five other retailers for selling tobacco to underage youth.

Kutub Sultan Trading, a tobacco retail outlet at Commonwealth Avenue West, will no longer be allowed to sell tobacco products from June 25 as its licence has been revoked.

REVENUE paid to government by Morogoro based Alliance One Tobacco Tanzania Limited (AOTTL) will increase from 1.7bn/- last year to 1.9bn/- this year, thanks to better production and rise of world market prices for the commodity.

The company’s Managing Director, Mark Mason and Finance Director, William Fernandes said the company which is now focusing on the export market, expects to increase its earnings significantly this fiscal year. Ream more »

Tobacco growers and lawmakers from Kentucky and other states are squaring off against anti-smoking groups over whether to include the crop in a trade agreement that the United States is negotiating with eight nations in the Pacific region.

Public health groups insist that excluding tobacco from such trade agreements helps the worldwide campaign to reduce smoking. But the lawmakers and farmers contend that barring tobacco could cause economic damage in Kentucky and other states and set a bad precedent.

Sale of tobacco products banned in Ajman

The sale of tobacco products has been banned at all outlets in the residential areas of Ajman.

Humaid Al Mualla, director of the Public Health and Environment Department, unveiling details about the new law issued by the Ajman Municipality and Planning Directorate, said that all big and small outlets operating in the residential areas of Ajman have been informed about the law and from next week a penalty of Dhs10,000 would be slapped on any outlet found selling tobacco products.

Sale and consumption of tobacco and related products is on the rise in the state, posing a serious problem for children who are the most vulnerable. To nip the problem in the bud, the state unit of National Tobacco Control Programme had brought it to the notice of chief minister Tarun Gogoi, who appealed to all concerned to stop sale of such products within 100 yards of educational institutes.

According to the recent findings of the global adult tobacco survey (GATS), Assam has about 40 per cent of the overall prevalence of tobacco use. Ream more »

Three stores fail surprise tobacco inspections

Three New Haven establishments failed surprise tobacco inspections last week, according to a Wednesday New Haven Police Department press release.

Under the direction of investigators from the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services’ Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program, the New Haven Police Department conducted inspections of 16 establishments that sell tobacco products to ensure their compliance with state law.
