From tomorrow all tobacco products, including cigarettes packages, entering Oman and other GCC borders, will bear mandatory pictorial warnings about the harmful impact of tobacco on human health.

Tobacco growers and lawmakers from Kentucky and other states are squaring off against anti-smoking groups over whether to include the crop in a trade agreement that the United States is negotiating with eight nations in the Pacific region.
Public health groups insist that excluding tobacco from such trade agreements helps the worldwide campaign to reduce smoking. But the lawmakers and farmers contend that barring tobacco could cause economic damage in Kentucky and other states and set a bad precedent.

The sale of tobacco products has been banned at all outlets in the residential areas of Ajman.
Humaid Al Mualla, director of the Public Health and Environment Department, unveiling details about the new law issued by the Ajman Municipality and Planning Directorate, said that all big and small outlets operating in the residential areas of Ajman have been informed about the law and from next week a penalty of Dhs10,000 would be slapped on any outlet found selling tobacco products.

Sale and consumption of tobacco and related products is on the rise in the state, posing a serious problem for children who are the most vulnerable. To nip the problem in the bud, the state unit of National Tobacco Control Programme had brought it to the notice of chief minister Tarun Gogoi, who appealed to all concerned to stop sale of such products within 100 yards of educational institutes.
