Schools to go tobacco-free

Henrico County public schools and school-sponsored events soon will be entirely tobacco-free, following the School Board’s 4-1 vote Sept. 27 to enact a tobacco-free policy.

The policy likely will not take effect officially for a period of at least a few months, so that staff members and visitors who smoke or use tobacco have time to become adjusted to it. Ream more »

The University of Oregon was the first of the Pac-12 to pronounce its campus smoke-free

The smoking ban forbids the use of all tobacco products on grounds owned or controlled by the University. It includes all buildings, athletic/entertainment facilities (such as Autzen Stadium), sidewalks, roadways, and parking lots.
The University of Oregon revealed their goal of becoming smoke- and tobacco-free during the fall of 2010. Nearly two years later, the University achieved its goal by enacting a smoking ban that began the September 1, 2012. Ream more »

Henrico school system going 100 percent smoke-free

The Henrico School Board voted 4-1 Thursday to ban tobacco use on school property at all times. The ban will include athletic events and nighttime meetings at schools.

Smoking and other tobacco use have long been prohibited for students, but the ban now extends to faculty, staff and visitors. The new policy will eliminate designated outdoor smoking areas for staff and visitors.

There are a lot of buts in the way of making the Greer city-owned parks and recreation facilities tobacco-free.
Councilwoman Judy Albert (District 6) took the opportunity to revisit a hot button topic at city council tonight, asking for a blanket tobacco-free ordinance making it unlawful for any person to smoke or otherwise use tobacco products in/on any cit-owned or city-leased recreation facility or park. Stepping up its campaign to make Amritsar tobacco-free, the district administration on Saturday conducted surprise checks at various hotels and eateries and fined them for not displaying boards against tobacco use.

Observers on the University of Houston campus this week noted the irony of seeing people taking cigarette breaks in front of the M.D. Anderson Library, which bears the same name as the world-famous cancer center across town. But the days of irony may be numbered, with the university proposing a total ban on the use, sale, advertising and sampling of all tobacco products on the 667-acre main campus (“There’ll be no ifs, ands or butts at UH,” Page A1, Saturday). West Virginia Northern Becomes Tobacco Free

West Virginia Northern Community College will become a tobacco-free campus starting in November.

The Board of Governors announced the decision Wednesday afternoon.

According to college officials all use of tobacco is prohibited on campus owned grounds including leased and operated property, buildings and vehicles.
