In September 2011, the Shoreline City Council adopted a Healthy City Strategy Work Plan for Shoreline titled Shoreline4Health. One strategy goal of this plan is to establish a tobacco-free zone in all of Shoreline’s parks and public sites.

The City University of New York made a bold move against smokers during a Board of Trustees meeting held late January last year. In early September of this year, all City University of New York campuses will be completely tobacco free.
This decision expands upon the tobacco policy enacted Sept. 29, 1994, which is an expansion upon a decision made by the Council of Presidents in 1990. This prohibits smoking in over 90 percent of the campus area including classrooms, auditoriums, elevators, hallways, restrooms and other common areas. South San Francisco students urged the city council Wednesday to support a resolution asking the Motion Picture Association to limit images of smoking and tobacco products in movies.
As part of the Smoke-Free Movie Campaign, students of the Youth Leadership Institute met with Mayor Richard Garbarino last week and gave a presentation concerning the negative affects of smoking and promoting tobacco products in the mass media. Ream more »
When the city rolled out its sweeping smoking ban this summer, eager to make the Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights list of smoke-free cities, the winners and losers were obvious. The winners: bars that already had sizable patios, cigar bars, and, many would argue, anyone with a set of lungs looking to imbibe clear of a carcinogenic cloud. Unaffected Alamo Heights’ bar and restaurant district sits ready to catch cigarette-puffing refugees aching for a drag while they sip their cocktails. And despite inclusion in early drafts of the ordinance, VFW posts, the River Walk, and the Shrine of Texas Liberty itself all escaped the ban. But if you’re an everyday pub, sports bar, or dive without a patio or enough space to build one: tough luck.

On Nov. 9, St. Joseph’s Hospital hosted the New York State Smokers Quitline’s “Action to Quit” summit. This important program brought employers, health care facilities, insurance companies and county government together in an effort to improve the physical and financial health of our community by developing more tobacco-free workplaces and by enhancing smoking cessation health benefits for employees.

Middle and high school students from across the state gathered at the Georgia National Fair Grounds Nov. 11-12 to launch a statewide, youth-led campaign to establish 100% tobacco-free schools policies in Georgia’s public schools.
The Healthy Schools Leadership Summit 2011, coordinated by a nonprofit called Youth Empowered Solutions, was held in partnership with the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH).

When a new anti-smoking law went into effect in Washington state six years ago, it drew an imaginary line. Smoking was banned in all public places and work areas, requiring people who light up to stay at least 25 feet away from doors, windows and vents leading to such spaces. Officially titled the Smoking in Public Places Act, the law – at the time – was the most restrictive yet to be adopted by any state in the nation.

Tobacco use among the mentally ill far outstrips use by other groups. The findings, released this month in a report, “A Hidden Epidemic: Tobacco Use and Mental Illness,” by the nonprofit Legacy put the rate at almost double that in the general population.
It doesn’t have to be. Virginia banned tobacco use for patients and staff in its 16 state psychiatric facilities in 2008. The smoking ban, implemented by the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services was precipitated by Executive Order No. 41 issued by former Gov. Tim Kaine in 2006. Ream more »
The American Cancer Society will honor SUNY Cortland for its decision to become a tobacco-free campus during a Wednesday, Nov. 16, campus event aimed at persuading students to participate in the annual Great American Smokeout.
Students will be encouraged to sign tobacco-free pledges and will be given “quit kits” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Corey Union during the event, scheduled for the day before the 36th annual Great American Smokeout on Thursday, Nov. 17. Ream more »
Washington- Beaufort County Schools (BCS) has entered its fourth tobacco-free school year. No individual may use or possess any tobacco products on BCS property.
The tobacco-free school policy applies to all school system property, including BCS vehicles. The policy also includes all school-sponsored events, both on and off-campus. Students, staff and visitors are encouraged to comply with this policy.
