Fresh setback for Nabi’s smoking-cessation vaccine

Nabi Biopharmaceuticals NABI +1.70% said its Phase 2 study of its smoking-cessation vaccine didn’t meet its primary endpoint, creating another setback for the drug.

Nabi, a developer of nicotine-addiction treatments, was studying the use of NicVAX, an investigational vaccine to help people stop smoking, in combination with the drug varenicline, also known as Chantix. Ream more »

EUROACTION PLUS: Varenicline aids in smoking cessation

A nurse-led, family-based preventive cardiology program in high-risk patients that included the use of varenicline (Chantix, Pfizer) cut smoking rates in half when compared with usual care, according to the results of a new study [1]. In addition, patients also improved their diet, exercised more, and did not gain any weight when treated with varenicline on top of usual care.

Cell Phone System Achieves High Smoking Cessation Rate

Call centre to help practices reach smoking target

The Government’s big hurry-up on smoking cessation has prompted Wellington-headquartered Compass Health to offer more help to practices struggling to reach and advise patients who smoke.

A call centre opened last week at Compass, with seven staff to phone patients on behalf of practices in the area from Wellington to Manawatu (MidCentral DHB) and the Wairarapa. Ream more »

Facebook Takes Centre Stage in Smoking Cessation Campaign

The page,‘Quit Together Peterborough’ on Facebook, encourages smokers to make an online pledge to stop smoking and also raise money for the British Heart Foundation by inviting their Facebook friends to sponsor them. Launched in January 2012, the page has received almost 1,000 hits.

It provides smokers trying to stop with a unique opportunity to access a wealth of support services and information as well as a forum to share their stories and offer help and encouragement to others. Ream more »

New Tobacco Cessation Program targeted towards pregnant women

New Tobacco Cessation
A FirstHealth of the Carolinas program funded by the North Carolina Chapter of the March of Dimes will help educate Richmond County moms on the dangers of smoking and second-hand smoke to their unborn babies.

The Tobacco Cessation Program grant will support FirstQuit for Life, an additional tobacco-cessation service under the FirstHealth Community Health Services FirstQuit program. FirstQuit for Life will address the effects of a mother’s tobacco use on her unborn child, the benefits of cessation for both mother and child, and the potential effects of second-hand smoke on infants.

MMDA opens smoking cessation clinic

THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has taken its campaign against smoking to another level as it opened a smoking cessation clinic to help those who have difficulty quitting their smoking habit.

MMDA General Manager Corazon Jimenez said the clinic, which is located at the agency’s main office in Orense, Makati is now offering medical and psychological support to those who want to kick the habit.
