fight against teen smokingMaine has been awarded a $750,000 federal grant to crack down on teen tobacco use.

The money will go to the Department of Health and Human Services through a contract with the Maine Attorney General’s Office. The agencies did not say how they will spend the money, although both federal and state laws prohibit tobacco sales to anyone under 18 and retailers must check IDs of anyone under 27.

Past efforts to reduce teen smoking in Maine appeared to help, but the trend recently reversed. The rate of smoking among Maine high school students reached a low of 14 percent in 2007, but increased to 18 percent in 2009, according to the state.

Illegal Tobacco Selling to Minors in U.S. Climbs After Decline

June 7th, 2010 Posted in Teens smoking Tags:

Illegal Tobacco Selling to MinorsThe percentage of retailers who made illegal sales of tobacco to young people in the U.S. rose, for the first time in at least 13 years, amid state enforcement cutbacks, a federal study found.
About 10.9 percent of retailers inspected by state officials sold tobacco to customers under the age of 18 in the year ended Sept. 30, up from 9.9 percent a year earlier, according to a report released today by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. State budget cuts and fewer inspections contributed to the increase, the report said.
The Food and Drug Administration is implementing a law barring companies led by Altria Group Inc. and Reynolds American Inc. from marketing tobacco to young people. The law, signed by President Barack Obama last June, also bans retail sales of tobacco to minors. FDA rules, due to take effect June 22, will let the agency enter contracts with states to enforce the curbs. Ream more »

tobacco and alcohol
Utah teens take few risks when it comes to tobacco and alcohol. But they’re more likely than their national peers to have attempted suicide and tried illegal drugs, such as heroin. Fewer young Utahns are overweight.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday released results of its annual youth assessment. Teens in grades 9 to 12 were given an anonymous, self-administered survey.
No one knows how much sex Utah youth are having; Utah isn’t allowed to ask. Nationally, nearly half of youth said they have had sex.
Some highlights of the 2009 report:
Tobacco
As usual, Utah stands out for having low cigarette use compared to the national averages:
» 23.5 percent had ever tried smoking, compared to 46 percent nationally;
» 8.5 percent had smoked at least once in the month before the survey, compared to 19.5 percent.
But Utah teens who smoke are apparently more committed to the habit:
» 10 percent of the Utahns who had smoked at least once had smoked more than 10 a day, compared to 8 percent nationally.
» And 43 percent of Utah teen smokers had tried to quit, compared to 51 percent nationally.
