Faculty and students are holding their breath for the campus-wide smoking ban that will take place on UCF’s main campus in the upcoming fall semester. Although the school is offering resources to educate nonsmokers and cessation workshops for smokers, not all students are onboard with the health initiative, and many are questioning how it will be enforced. Supervisors ban smoking in parks

The Exeter Township supervisors have voted 3-2 to ban smoking in parks as part of the statewide Young Lungs at Play program.

Supervisors Kenneth A. Smith and Gary E. Lloyd voted no.

The ban was requested by the Council on Chemical Abuse, which is urging municipalities to ban smoking in public parks as part of the state program.

AT LAST, a fine we can get behind from the city of Passaic. The City Council wisely passed an ordinance this week forbidding smoking in any city-owned buildings, in any city parks and at any recreational facilities. Violators will face steep penalties, ranging from $250 for the first offense to $1,000 for the third and subsequent offenses, Staff Writer Richard Cowen reports.

Parks to enforce smoking ban

A ban on smoking in all Camden County parks will officially go into effect today, especially at those parks that contain playgrounds.

A park policy prohibiting the smoking of tobacco products in the parks has been on the books since last year, Camden County officials said, but the ban has not been rolled out publicly nor has it been enforced. Ream more »

Allentown bans smoking in public housing

If you live in Allentown public housing, you can still smoke ‘em if you got ‘em, but starting this week, you’ll have to take ‘em outside.

The Allentown Housing Authority has become only the second public housing authority in Pennsylvania to ban smoking in its buildings.

Casper City Council approves smoking ban

The Casper City Council voted Tuesday night to approve the controversial smoking ban.
The new law is scheduled to go into effect Sept. 1.
Councilmen Paul Bertoglio and Bill Brauer cast the only votes against the ban, although they joined the rest of the council in voting in favor of the Sept. 1 start date, which Bertoglio had proposed.
The start date could be effected by the success of a petition drive opponents of the ban say they will mount. Ream more »

South Bend council hears smoking ban debate

The South Bend Common Council isn’t scheduled to vote until next week on a proposal to ban smoking in city bars, but its members got a head start on the debate Monday night.

Doctors and health advocates quoted statistics about the effects of tobacco use, and bar owners talked about their rights to run their businesses as they see fit, during the two-hour hearing. Ream more »

Smokers in Spring Hill may have fewer places to light up. On Monday, the mayor and alderman will vote on a proposal to ban smoking in parks.

One can find the Myers family at the park at least once a week. “They love it,” mom Christy Myers said about her children. “My oldest is always on the swings (and) climbing up the slides. She’s here a lot, and we love to come.” Ream more »

Lawyer plans 9th Amendment argument against Indy smoking ban

Opponents of Indianapolis’ smoking ban are fired up about what they see as an impingement upon their rights.

Indianapolis-based attorney Mark Small filed a motion Wednesday in federal court to combine several lawsuits filed against the ban. Small is representing 43 plaintiffs, including 10 bars, one bar customer and one bar employee.
