Calls For Plain Cigarette Packets

9 in 10 young people in the region think less glamorous packaging would put them off smoking. That’s according to research carried out by Smokefree South West.

It’s thought 200,000 teenagers will start smoking this year by the age of 19 and now the organisation is launching a campaign for cigarettes to be sold in plain packets with more health warnings on to help people kick the habit or put them off before they even start.

West Virginia Cigarettes Priced Lowest

A list from a “discussion” website gauged the price of a pack of cigarettes in each state Thursday, and West Virginia’s pack was the cheapest.

A pack of Marlboro Reds, including tax, could run from $4.74 per pack all the way to $11.90 across the United States, and the rock-bottom price can be found in West Virginia.
TheAwl.com, a “discussion” website, published a list Thursday its writer compiled by calling a gas station in each state’s most populous city, then asking the clerk for the price of a pack of Marlboro Reds with tax.

Somerset store put on probation for selling cigarettes to minors

The Wilbur Avenue Shell convenience store was given a three-month probation by the Board of Health on Wednesday after it was twice caught selling cigarettes to minors.

The store sold a pack of Marlboros to a 17-year-old male in December 2008 and a pack of Newports to a 16-year-old female in October 2010, said Marilyn Edge, the area tobacco cessation and prevention coordinator for the SouthCoast Tobacco Control Program. The two instances, both from sting operations, within a two-year span brought the issue before the Board of Health. Ream more »

But because the mere knowledge of the dangers of smoking is not driving home the message to thousands of you teenagers who light up each year, the Food and Drug Administration has decided to try yet another anti-smoking campaign — intensely graphic images that will be displayed on cigarette packs.

Study Calls for Simpler Packaging of Cigarettes

A recently conducted study by researchers at the University of Otago has stated that bigger warning signs on the pack of cigarettes can drastically help in reducing the number of smokers in the country. The study witnessed the participation of 292 smokers from the age of 18-years old to 30-years old.

Apart from suggesting bigger warning lables, the study has noted that a simpler packaging would also help in deterring youngsters from taking up smoking. Ream more »
