A medical marijuana dispensary in Saginaw?

Two Saginaw businessmen think purchasing an ounce of high-grade medical marijuana should be no more tedious than a drive to Walgreens for a prescription.

But Saginaw County and city legal leaders say medical marijuana dispensaries, like the several exchanges that operate in Bay County, are illegal.

With regard to dispensaries, it looks like Saginaw leaders won’t have the luxury of waiting for legal precedent regarding distribution of medical marijuana, as Saginaw Attorney Thomas H. Fancher said he had hoped.

Medical marijuana bill gets initial

A House committee yesterday unanimously passed a bill that seeks to amend the sweeping medical marijuana laws passed last year. House Bill 1043 would in part lessen the residency requirements for employees of medical marijuana centers, allow medical marijuana centers to trade marijuana with other centers, and require a primary caregiver who cultivates marijuana to register the cultivation site and all patient identification numbers with the state. The plants that will ultimately produce medical marijuana in Arizona are not legally in the ground, but police agencies are already planning how their officers will try to enforce state pot laws while respecting a sick resident’s right to possess the herb.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said he would assign a special unit to target medical-marijuana frauds, but the unit so far consists of two deputies and a former U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration official who works for free. Ream more »

Arizonans who get a doctor’s recommendation to buy medical marijuana are going to have to shell out a little extra money for the state – and maybe a whole lot more.
Attorney General Tom Horne said Wednesday that the marijuana sold at state-regulated dispensaries being set up under Proposition 203 is subject to the state and local sales taxes. Ream more »

Clay Butler is developing a line of “soda pot” called Canna Cola, a medical marijuana soft drink. In addition to that flavor, the California-based commercial artist plans on releasing others, including “Dr. Pepper-like Doc Weed, lemon-lime Sour Diesel, grape-flavored Grape Ape and orange-flavored Orange Kush,” according to the Santa Cruz Sentinel. Laguna Woods – Wearing a powder-blue cardigan and orthopedic shoes, 86-year-old Dorothy Davidson learned how to make a marijuana smoothie as well as the difference between consuming baked weed and the raw plant at a Saturday conference aiming to teach seniors about medical cannabis.
“You hear so many negative things about it,” said Davidson. “Now I know how it works.”

Washington struggles with use of medical marijuana

When Elliott Cain lived in California, staff at a marijuana dispensary there recommended a mild brand of marijuana that they said was effective at treating anxiety.

Cain, who had a doctor’s authorization to use marijuana as medicine, found it did just that, tamping down his anxiety without zonking him out.

But when he moved to Washington, medical marijuana was no longer an option. The only legal drugs he could access were prescription medicines that interfered with his sleep.

No to medical marijuana zones — for now

Southfield’s City Council voted unanimously tonight against proposed zoning regulations that would have allowed medical marijuana growing facilities in the city’s light industrial districts.
The vote came after more than a dozen residents — most opposed to the measure — and two lawyers debated the validity of the zoning. Most council members said they still needed to do more research. They then voted unanimously to extend the city’s 180-day moratorium from July — scheduled to end Friday — for another 180 days. Ream more »
