Synthetic marijuana widely used at Naval Academy, some midshipmen say

A synthetic form of marijuana is widely used at the U.S. Naval Academy because it cannot be detected in routine drug tests, according to several former midshipmen who have been removed from campus for using or possessing the substance.

Since its introduction at the academy last year, synthetic marijuana has become popular among rank-and-file midshipmen and on the football and wrestling teams, the former midshipmen said. Some isolated corners of the historic Annapolis campus, they said, have become well-known gathering spots for smoking it.

Marijuana Tax Begins In San Jose

A measure approved by San Jose voters in November will come to fruition on Tuesday as local marijuana dispensaries will be required to pay a 7% tax. Measure U was passed with 78% of the vote in November.

To help the dispensaries prepare, City officials will be holding a seminar at City Hall Monday morning. Those who operate the dispnsaries will learn how to determine the tax by remitting their gross receipts. Ream more »

Don’t minimize effects of synthetic marijuana

In January a man was arrested and held after making death threats at Duluth’s Last Place on Earth (“Man held after threats at Last Place on Earth,” Jan. 24). The man reportedly demanded synthetic marijuana and a small amount of cash. The store owner was quoted as saying, “We’ve had little issues with this guy before.” The owner likely would minimize the gravity of such behavior because it was directly relative to the use of synthetic marijuana, something the Last Place on Earth openly promotes.

Delegates Approve Ban on Synthetic Marijuana

When synthetic marijuana first hit Virginia stores in 2006, its use spread like wildfire among teenagers. Now, because of legislation moving toward approval in the General Assembly, the legality of the chemical-based substance may be going up in smoke.

Under House Bill 1434, which passed the House of Delegates by a 98-0 vote on Monday, Virginia would criminalize synthetic marijuana and classify it as a Schedule 1 drug, grouping it with marijuana (cannabis). The Senate unanimously approved a similar proposal last week.

Traffic stop nets 20 pounds of marijuana

A traffic stop near Lake Charles has landed two men in jail on drug charges.
According to a Louisiana State Police news release, troopers on Tuesday stopped a car on Interstate 10 eastbound for a traffic violation. After the stop, authorities say they received permission to search the car and found almost 20 pounds of marijuana in it.
State police say the marijuana has an approximate street value of $24,000. Ream more »

An upcoming movie starring Miley Cyrus has been edited so as not to show her character smoking marijuana after Cyrus was seen smoking from a bong in a real life home video, Us Weekly reported Monday. The video showed Cyrus in December 2010, five days after her 18th birthday, smoking the legal hallucinogenic herb salvia from a bong. “OK, I’m about to lose it now,” the “Hannah Montana” star says in the video after a particularly long hit. “I’m having a little of a bad trip.” Read more

Lawmakers back bills to criminalize synthetic marijuana

Legislation that would criminalize the possession, manufacture and sale of products that constitute what is being called “synthetic marijuana” breezed through a House of Delegates committee Monday on a unanimous bipartisan vote. Approval of House Bill 1434 would classify synthetic marijuana as a controlled substance. It would provide punishments for the chemical compounds — known commercially by names such as “Spice” and “K2″ — with the punishments prescribed under the criminal code for similar offenses concerning marijuana.

Synthetic pot bust a first in Calgary

I n what’s considered the first case of its kind in Calgary, police have seized synthetic drugs designed to mimic the effects of marijuana. During raids of seven stores Tuesday, police seized 770 packets of merchandise worth an estimated $30,000.

A subsequent raid of a warehouse yielded a further 280 packages, police said.

“Up until recently, this has never been seized in the city,” said Det. Collin Harris of the Calgary police drug unit.

DJK pleads guilty to marijuana possession

Former Iowa wide receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos has pleaded guilty to marijuana possession and other drug charges against him have been dismissed.
Johnson-Koulianos was granted a deferred judgment Monday. He received a year’s probation and was fined $315.
Johnson-Koulianos had also been charged with unlawful possession of cocaine and prescription drugs. Ream more »
