Mesa students hospitalized after smoking incident

Four students at Mesa High School were taken to a hospital Wednesday after allegedly smoking an unknown substance.

Mesa police and fire were called to the school nurse’s office about 2 p.m. They said seven juveniles between the ages of 14 and 18 were experiencing rapid heartbeats, signs of high blood pressure and running mild temperatures. Ream more »

Drop in illegal tobacco sales as latest raid recovers 42,000 cigarettes in Middlesbrough

NEW figures have been released showing another fall in the illegal tobacco market in the North-East.

And the illegal tobacco trade in Middlesbrough has been dealt a major blow following the seizure of a huge haul of cigarettes and tobacco. The swoop on a house in the town led to the recovery of more than 42,000 cigarettes and more than 2.25kg of hand rolling tobacco.

Howard County traffic stop nets $40,000 in contraband cigarettes

A routine traffic stop Tuesday by a state police officer in Howard County resulted in one arrest and the confiscation of $40,000 worth of contraband cigarettes, according to a state comptroller news release.

El-Housseni Hassan, 23, of Brooklyn, was charged with transporting and possession of contraband cigarettes after he was pulled over by a state trooper on Interstate 95 South near the Route 175 exit in Jessup at 11:57 a.m. Tuesday.

5 Trafficked $6.4M Of Untaxed Cigarettes

Trafficked Untaxed Cigarettes
A year-long multi-agency investigation into the illegal trafficking of untaxed cigarettes concluded with the arrest of five defendants and the seizure of more than 100 cases of cigarettes and more than $958,000 in cash.

Prosecutors said that beginning in July 2011, a confidential informant began working with the DA’s Office, the New York Police Department, and the Queens DA’s Office, on a joint investigation into the illegal sale of untaxed cigarettes. Ream more »

$50BN lost annually through illicit tobacco trade

According to the Framework Convention Alliance, illicit trade in cigarettes is estimated at approximately 10.7 percent of global sales, or 600 billion cigarettes annually, while global losses in government revenue as a result of illicit trade in all tobacco products is estimated at approximately $40 billion to $50 billion or(381 billion) annually. Governments must take a stand against contraband tobacco sales, distribution

In a perfect world, nobody would be addicted to tobacco. Unfortunately, we don’t live in a perfect world and tobacco abuse takes the lives of an estimate 45,000 Canadian citizens every year.

Still, it is a legal product, controlled to an extent through government regulation. It is also an important revenue stream for convenience store owners in Northumberland County who are beset by the competition from unregulated contraband cigarettes that come easy and cheap from various producers.
