Leave alone hookah restaurants

The High Court on Monday told the police not to bother the hookah restaurants in the city. Justice PV Sanjay Kumar of the AP High court issued directions to the city police not to interfere with the business of hookah parlours after a writ petition was filed by Melange Enterprises, a coffee shop in Banjara Hills.

The petitioner had complained that the police intervention in their businesses was without the authority of law. Ream more »

Hookah bars a blight on city’s image

The recent incident in which around 25 college boys and girls were caught puffing hookahs during a police crackdown on a hookah bar in Deshpande Nagar has become the talk of campus in the city.

The issue has raised serious concerns about the entry of hookah bars to smaller cities which was hitherto restricted to metros. TOI spoke to students of JG Commerce College, seeking their views on the role of the educational institutions and police officials in curbing such illegal activities.

Oregon lawmakers aim to limit growth of hookah lounges

As Oregon lawmakers and advocacy groups have sought to make the state’s indoor buildings smoke free, they say one type of business was unintentionally exempted from the rules — hookah lounges.

Hookah lounges are popular among college-age kids, who frequent the businesses to hang out, study and socialize while smoking flavored tobacco from water pipes.

Sammer Karout faced another long night at City Hall on Tuesday in his fight to bring a hookah lounge to Milford, along with yet another setback.

“We have filed an appeal to the Superior Court, but zoning appeals can be settled. We have made an offer to settle outside of court, an offer which [City Attorney] Win Smith will present to the Board in Executive Session tonight,” said Karout’s attorney, Thomas Lynch of Milford.

What’s new: By denying the liquor license application Tuesday of Oasis Hookah Bar, 315 S. 16th St., Omaha’s City Council gave the owners time to get their landlord’s consent before they go before the State Liquor Control Commission in May.
The details: Co-owner Jesse Hill has applied for a liquor license so he can sell non-alcoholic drinks at his hookah bar, which offers special tobacco to be smoked on-site using a large water pipe. Ream more »

Minister of State for Public Health, Family Welfare, AYUSH and Medical Education Mahendra Hardia has taken a serious note of the news that some hookah centres are making people smoking-addicts by running their joints in the garb of coffee shops and has instructed to take stern action against them. On the instructions by the Minister of State for Health, the Health Department has send a circular to all the district collectors to form a team and conduct surprise checks on these hookah centres.

Hookah or narghileAs fewer people puff away on cigarettes, a new smoking trend is gaining popularity among young North Americans.

A new survey, published in the journal Pediatrics, confirmed that as many as one-quarter of young people in North America have used a hookah, also known as a water pipe, shisha, narghile or hubble bubble, in the last year. And according to a study in the current issue of the American Journal of Health Behavior, hookah prevalence is on the rise worldwide.

Researchers believe the popularity of water pipes may be due in part to the perception that they are safer than cigarettes.
