status for hookah bar
A hookah bar may run as a nightclub but shouldn’t sell alcohol on site, the planning commission recommended Tuesday.

Owners of Ali Baba Hookah Bar, 923 Berryville Ave., sought a conditional use permit for a nightclub to allow live music and karaoke.

The owners also sought to revise the original permit, approved in May, to remove a restriction on the sale of alcoholic beverages.

Hookah ban will smolder a while longer

hookah party
A bill that would have banned public use of e-cigarettes and hookah pipes hit a snag Monday, as House members balked at a bill that would have shut down a Utah hookah bar without compelling data.

“I really hate to make a state policy based upon — even the sponsor of the bill’s own statement — that we really don’t have good data,” said Rep. Richard Greenwood, R-Roy.

Under current law, individuals can use a hookah pipe or electronic cigarettes anywhere because the Utah Indoor Clean Air Act bans combustion of tobacco, and hookahs and e-cigarettes don’t burn the material.

Regulating hookah
State legislation barring minors from hookah smoking or buying hookah-related products went into effect on Jan. 1, after Gov. Cuomo signed the bill into law last July.
The legislation regulates a product and business trade that until now has gone largely unregulated.
Hookahs are waterpipes traditionally used in Middle Eastern countries for smoking “shisha,” a fruity, herbal substance that can contain tobacco. Hookah bars and shops selling hookah products are prevalent throughout New York and Queens.
Regulating hookah smoking became a hot-button issue in recent years after the practice experienced a surge in popularity, especially among young people. Ream more »

The BBMP ban on cafes serving hookah may have had some effect on a few sections of the public, but it does not seem to have goaded youngsters to kick the habit entirely. Many youngsters are now buying hookahs and continue to smoke it in the confines of their homes. Ream more »

The Appeal of the Hookah Lounge

style hookah lounge
“I think Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland popularized the term ‘hookah’ for water pipe,” began Sevel. “Technically, hookahs are used in India as pipes for opium and hashish. The tobacco pipes we use here are known in Egypt as shisha pipes.” (Hookah smoking began in Turkey about 400 years ago and quickly spread to Egypt and from there to the rest of the world.) But, thanks to Alice, most places in the U.S. use the incorrect term.

Hookah pipes escape
THE impending State Government ban on the sale of bongs will not include hookah pipes because of cultural reasons, after consultation with members of Melbourne’s Arabic community.
The exemption has been criticised by anti-smoking groups, who argue that all cultural groups should be entitled to a safe, smoke-free environment.
A Bailleau Government spokesman confirmed that Hookah pipes – also known as shisha, narghile or goza – would still be available, although there will be restrictions on their display. Ream more »
