The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department has asked a judge to order the operators of a local lounge to stop allowing the smoking of hookah pipes in their establishment.
The department filed paperwork in Pierce County Superior Court earlier this month seeking an injunction against the Night Owl, 5211 South Tacoma Way.

The hookah lounge that caused a stir in the Buell Building when other tenants complained about the sweet-smelling smoke is moving.
Anthony Conklin said Sahara Nights will move to 729 Main St. by Nov. 1. Until then, Sahara Nights will remain in the basement of the Buell Building, where it has done business since it opened last spring.

There’s mixed news to report about smoking and college students.
According to a new study, smoking by college students has declined since 2006. But at the same time, waterpipe or hookah smoking has increased significantly, by about 20 percent for non-cigarette smokers in the same demographic.

The recent proliferation of hookah shops in Little Egypt might be harmful to children’s health, even if they are just passing by on the sidewalk, parents say.
While some restaurants in “Hookah Central,” on Steinway Street between 25th and 28th avenues, require customers to smoke indoors, other venues have set up chairs in front of entrances, where people enjoy smoking while sipping coffee.

The San Jacinto City Council on Monday, Aug. 20, approved an interim urgency ordinance that would impose a temporary 45-day moratorium on new smoke shop and hookah lounge applications.

Home minister RR Patil, who shut down dance bars in the state, is now contemplating a complete ban on hookah parlours.
“The existing fine for serving hookahs is just Rs1,200. It’s not a deterrent. If you raid a [hookah] joint, the owners are ready with the fine money. We don’t want the youth to gamble away their futures over such an addiction because of sheer mmaturity,” said Patil. Ream more »
Hookah bars in Haryana, particularly in Gurgaon, Faridabad, Rohtak and Panipat, are under the scanner of the state’s food and drugs administration (FDA). The agency conducted raids on seven such bars in Gurgaon on Thursday and a total of 28 in October through which 77 samples were taken. Officials suspect that these samples have more than the permitted level of nicotine.
