Hookah bars in Haryana, particularly in Gurgaon, Faridabad, Rohtak and Panipat, are under the scanner of the state’s food and drugs administration (FDA). The agency conducted raids on seven such bars in Gurgaon on Thursday and a total of 28 in October through which 77 samples were taken. Officials suspect that these samples have more than the permitted level of nicotine.

Layne Cronin’s idea of relaxation is one imported from the Middle East: smoking flavored tobacco from an elaborate water pipe at a hookah lounge.
Once only found in urban areas and ethnic enclaves, the social practice has slowly been embraced in the suburbs. “The atmosphere is really relaxing after a day of work,” said Cronin, 24, of Sayreville. “You just hang out and chill with people.”

Hookah parlours in the city have urged the state government to give them a chance to operate, saying they would be strict on age restrictions andin enforcing entry norms.
The appeal comes after the Madras high court on Tuesday directed the government to take measures to regulate the hookah bars.Justice V Dhanapalan said officials should either prohibit them from functioning or permit them with stringent conditions as per the Chennai City Municipal andCorporation Act.

Yara Yanes knows it is bad for her health, but that doesn’t stop her from sharing a hookah pipe with friends.

“It is fun. It is a social thing,” said the 20-year-old university student who works as a waitress at Arabesque Café in Kitchener, one of seven known hookah parlours in Waterloo Region.

“I know it is more harmful than cigarettes, but my parents would want me to smoke it (hookah) and not cigarettes” as it is part of her Middle Eastern culture, said the Syrian native.

Hookah bar owners likely to knock on court’s door

The hookah bar owners in the city have decided not to take their licences back from the police commissioner’s office on Wednesday after they were told to give in writing that they will not serve hookahs at their restaurants.

According to these owners, the police are ready to return their licences on condition that they will have to close down hookah bars. A source at commissioner’s office said that licence of about 25 hookah bars in city have been seized after Police Commissioner Sudhir Sinha issued the order.

Hookah might seem almost alien contraption at first: A bulbous tube crowned with flavored tobacco — called shisha — and heated charcoal, flanked on several sides by colorful snaking hoses through which users inhale water-filtered smoke.

But despite growing national concerns about the novel pastime, some UI students said they believe hookahs are safer and more enjoyable than smoking cigarettes.

Mosaik Hookah Lounge has scheduled a soft grand opening for Friday, a store owner told me yesterday.

Hookah fans, bar owners, cocktail waitresses and bartenders showed up in force at a hearing to speak against a proposed ban on hookahs in public spaces.

In a packed and overheated hearing room dozens of citizens showed up to voice opposition to a proposed rule change that would extend the Utah Indoor Clean Air Act’s prohibition of cigarette and tobacco smoke in public places to also include hookah smoke. Ream more »
