Tobacco Bill to go before Parliament

AFTER more than a decade in the making, the Tobacco Bill — which seeks to control the use of tobacco in the island — is soon to be put before Parliament.
Health Minister Rudyard Spencer says the chief parliamentary counsel is now making final amendments to the document and he expects it to be tabled in Parliament within the next three weeks.
Spencer made the disclosure Monday as he addressed a high-level breakfast forum on chronic diseases and physical activity at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, where it was noted that that tobaccos use, specifically cigarette smoking, was a leading risk factor for non-communicable diseases (NCDs). A federal law is restricting the words “light,” “low,” and “mild” from tobacco products now on the market, as health officials launch a campaign to inform smokers that there’s no such thing as a safe cigarette. Under the 2009 Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, a tobacco company can’t use the words “light,” “low,” and “mild” on any cigarette products now on the market unless FDA has issued an order allowing it—and that hasn’t happened. Smoking makes you stupid

(NaturalNews) Smoking is directly correlated with a lower IQ, according to a study conducted by researchers from Tel Aviv University in Israel and published in the journal Addiction.
Researchers tested the IQs of more than 20,000 healthy men between the ages of 18 and 21 who were either serving in the Israeli military or who had recently completed their service. Twenty-eight percent of the men in the sample smoked, while 3 percent were former smokers and 68 percent had never smoked. Ream more »

Hookah and cigarettes: which is worse?

Two lighters are lit. One is held to the end of a cigarette while the other is held to a piece of charcoal on top of a hookah. Both items are being lit to produce tobacco smoke.
We know tobacco causes multiple health problems, but is one method of smoking it safer than the other?
In an anonymous poll of FGCU students, cigarettes were deemed worse. Out of 35 students polled, 63.2 percent said they believed smoking a cigarette is safer than a 45-minute hookah session. Ream more »

hot, smoking womenTo allow the statewide smoking ban to become the law of Kansas on Thursday would violate the equal protection clause of the U.S. Constitution and the Kansas Bill of Rights, an attorney representing a club in Tonganoxie said.
Blocking the statewide smoking ban against smoking in enclosed public spaces would be bad for your health, an assistant attorney general has countered.
Today, Shawnee County District Court Judge Franklin Theis will hear arguments from the assistant attorney general and five businesses seeking to dismantle the law before it hits the statute books Thursday. Legal arguments before Theis will be at 9:30 a.m. at the Shawnee County Courthouse.
