In a bid to curb rising cancer cases in Himachal Pradesh, the government had banned the sale of tobacco products from Friday onwards but despite ban shopkeepers are still selling the products like gutkha, khaini in their shops due to ineffective monitoring.

After finding no effect of ban orders, now excise and taxation department has decided to launch a drive from Monday onwards to destroy the tobacco products.

Ajman groceries banned from selling cigarettes

Ajman Ajman has banned small groceries and other small shops from selling cigarettes under a government public health drive.
The sale will be allowed only in shopping malls, petrol pumps and big stores.
The municipality has said in recent notices and online statements that “for health protection of all residents” groceries can no longer sell tobacco products.

THE 2012 tobacco selling season opens on February 15 amid expectations from stakeholders of high output and quality crop. The tobacco would be auctioned at four floors — Tobacco Sales Floor, Boka Tobacco Floors, Millennium Tobacco and Premier Tobacco. Players in the industry told Standardbusiness they hope for a “bit more in terms of national yield and better quality tobacco”.

Zimbabwe Progressive Tobacco Farmers Union president, Nicholas Kapungu, told Standardbusiness that the organisation is optimistic ahead of the selling season, as all members will sell the crop to one buyer, Star International Tobacco, whom they have agreed with on prices. Ream more »

Shops fined for selling tobacco products near schools

As many as 20 shops from around five educational institutions in the city were fined after they were found selling tobacco products in raids conducted on Thursday.

ACS urges against selling tobacco bonds

The American Cancer Society is urging state lawmakers to reject the sale of the state’s tobacco bonds included as part of the budget deal reached Thursday and instead adopt a $1.50 cigarette tax increase.

“We, like all Minnesotans, want to see an end to the political stalemate at the Capitol,” said Matt Schafer, Minnesota Government Relations Director for the American Cancer Society. “But selling the tobacco bonds is not the answer. Doing so puts the state’s fiscal and physical health at risk for years to come.”
