A MAN who was in possession of cigarettes for sale at Balbriggan Market was further remanded on continuing bail at last week’s sitting of Balbriggan District Court. Richard Smyth of Drive 2, Muirhevnamore in Dundalk is charged with the sale of 15 cartons of Superking cigarettes and 14 cartons of Rothmans cigarettes at the market on the Naul Road, Balbriggan on November 6th with a loss of revenue to the State of €5,000. Cigarette sales at stores rise follow vending ban

Convenience stores in England are reporting moderate rises in their tobacco sales following the ban on tobacco vending machines, which came into force on October 1.

It is now illegal for pubs, clubs, hotels, cafés and bookmakers in England to sell tobacco products from vending machines. The law is as yet unchanged in the rest of the UK, although Scotland and Wales are expected to implement similar bans next year.

Highland shop fined after underage cigarettes sales

A HIGHLAND shop that sold cigarettes to an under-age “customer” has been hit by two fixed penalties of £200.
Highland Council’s Trading Standards department issued the two notices after a test-purchase exercise undertaken across the Highlands that involved the use of a young volunteer.
The £200 penalties, which were new sanctions introduced by Scottish legislation earlier this year, were issued to the shop assistant who made the illegal sale and to the company operating the shop premises in the Badenoch and Strathspey area. Ream more »

Effort to curb cigarette sales in Taunton pharmacies gains steam again

While a major step forward was announced by United States regulators regarding warnings on cigarette packages, a local effort to get tobacco off Taunton pharmacy shelves remains mired.
In March, representatives of the nonprofit Silver City Teen Center and Marilyn Edge, the South Coast Tobacco Control coordinator, brought a proposal to the Taunton Board of Health, urging the city to adopt a policy of not allowing pharmacies to sell cigarettes. Ream more »

Cigarette sales down 15 per cent

CIGARETTE sales are down by 15 per cent, compared to this time last year but rolling tobacco sales are up 25 per cent, since the tobacco tax hike was imposed in December, a leading importer said yesterday.
The importer, who wished to remain anonymous, told reporters yesterday: “Smokers have abandoned cigarettes in favour of rolling tobacco,” The reason is that rolling tobacco is now cheaper, even with the new tax. Ream more »

Cigarettes and Four Loko have different rules

While watching the TV news, there was a story regarding the alcoholic drink, Four Loko. It was mentioned that local distributors are being asked to stop selling the product due to its caffeine and high alcohol content. Interestingly, the very next news piece was in regard to the discussion of placing disturbing graphics on cigarette packaging to deter smokers from buying and smoking cigarettes. Read more
