British American Tobacco (BAT) has launched a High Court challenge against a law that will require plain packaging on cigarettes in Australia, claiming it infringes intellectual property rights.

British American Tobacco PLC said Wednesday it remains on track for a year of good earnings growth as the world’s second-biggest tobacco group by revenue posted a rise in nine-month sales, but volumes fell as smokers struggle with tough global economic conditions.
“While the challenging economic conditions continued to impact consumers in some markets, other markets are showing signs of recovery. Excise-driven price increases in a few markets will continue to affect industry volumes,” Chief Executive Nicandro Durante said in a statement. Ream more »
