A coalition targeting Alberta’s smoking laws will be hitting Grande Prairie Thursday at the PC Candidates’ forum.

The campaign for a Smoke-Free Alberta is launching a Vote for Health initiative set on targeting the leadership candidates of Alberta’s Conservative and Liberal parties to gain support for steps toward preventing tobacco use amongst the province’s youth.

Les Hagen, executive director for the Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) says that the province’s projected targets on reducing smoking amongst teens between the ages of 12 and 19 to 10% were not met since their first anti-smoking initiative in 2006. Ream more »

No Smoking Day
There has been an overwhelming response — from readers who wish to quit smoking — to Gulf News’ community service campaign Stub It!
The readers represent a wide spectrum of people and come from different backgrounds. However, they have one thing in common — they have tried to give up smoking on their own and have failed.
One reader named Fahd Saghir sent this impassioned plea for help: “There is a cardiac problem in our family, and [I] know it very well but still continue to do so [smoke]. Ream more »

Ken Ulman, take note. You’ve made three future voters happy with the latest anti-smoking regulation in Howard County.

Actually, two future voters. Our 11 year-old was worried when I told him about the ban on smoking in county parks. “Does this mean Dad won’t take us to the park anymore?”

Yes, my husband and I smoke. I’m not proud of it, but it’s a fact.

China’s anti-smoking activists try a new argument: that it’s bad for the economy

When China issued its first national ban on public smoking last month, health advocates cheered but didn’t hold their breath. Like many anti-smoking regulations in China, this one seemed hollow, and for good reason.

A month later, the ban has had little, if any, effect. Smoking remains rampant in spaces where it has been prohibited, such as restaurants, schools and hospitals.
The main reason so few take China’s campaign against cigarettes seriously: The very government promising to crack down on tobacco use is the owner and chief beneficiary of the $93 billion industry. Ream more »

Despite anti-smoking efforts, candy cigs still around

Hey kids, want some cigarettes?

How about a pack of Round Ups, featuring a photo of a Marlboro Man-like cowboy on a horse? Or maybe you’d prefer a pack of Lucky Lights. Lucky Lights, as in Lucky Strike cigarettes – just in case you didn’t get the connection between these candy smokes and the kind you’ll get to smoke when you grow up a little.

In the meantime, the candy cigarettes are good practice.

The Department of Health conferred the “Red Orchid” award on this city for its effective implementation of anti-smoking ordinances.

Mayor Jose Enrique Garcia III thanked the City Health Office for leading the campaign as well as the Sangguniang Panlungsod for creating two ordinances prohibiting smoking in public. A win in the fight against smoking

fight against smoking
IT WAS a long time coming – too long – but the federal Coalition is to be congratulated for declaring its support for the introduction of plain packaging of cigarettes in Australia. It appeared that the government would have been able to pass its legislation anyway, with the backing of the cross-benchers and some Liberal MPs who had vowed to follow their consciences and cross the floor of Parliament if their party had resolved to vote against the bill.
