Debating, defending the P.S.A. test: Yesterday, I included in this roundup a New York Times blog post from a doctor looking at the troubles with cancer screening, published after the US Preventive Services Task Force said last week that healthy men should not be given a P.S.A. blood test to screen for prostate cancer. The newspaper also published this letter from Dr. Donald S. Kaufman, an oncologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, saying the prostate test is invaluable and abandoning it will lead to more deaths from the cancer. (Hat tip to Tinker Ready for pointing the letter out on her blog.) Gary Schwitzer’s HealthNewsReview has an interesting video from a pair of doctors discussing the test, one who chose to get tested and one who didn’t.
