marijuana for medical use
A handful of governors have launched a new push for marijuana to be reclassified so that the drug is more widely accepted for medical treatment.

By mid-December 2011, three governors had signed a petition asking the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to conduct a new scientific review of cannabis research. Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin was the latest to add his signature to a petition started Nov. 30, 2011, by Washington state Gov. Chris Gregoire and Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee. Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper’s administration made a similar request to the DEA on Dec. 22, 2011, according to the governor’s spokesman. Ream more »

Kids smoking and snorting Smarties candy

Kids smoking
Teens and middle school children are “smoking” and snorting crushed up Smarties candy. Many teens are uploading their Smartie snorting and smoking adventures on You Tube and surprisingly, many of the uploaded videos are filmed while students are in class.

When “smoking Smarties,” the kids aren’t actually lighting a match to the candy. Instead, they crush it into a fine powder in its wrapper, draw it into their mouths and then blow it out in a cloud of dust. Some more advanced Smarties “smokers” are even learning to blow “smoke rings” with the candy.

patting marijuana user
The health news for pot smokers just keeps getting better. Last week, researchers released a study concluding that occasional pot users suffered no long-term effects in terms of memory and mental function — and in some cases actually scored better on memory tests than people who said they didn’t touch the potent weed — when they hit middle age. This week comes more research that’ll tickle those who take an occasional toke — and bring them even more bragging rights, especially over cigarette smokers: According to a long-term study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, low to moderate marijuana use has no significant negative effect on users’ respiratory health, especially not when compared to regular tobacco use. OU debating its tobacco policy

January 13th, 2012 Posted in Tobacco control Tags:

tobacco policy
Recent news reports indicate that OU President David Boren is still considering whether to include a number of designated smoking areas across the Norman campus in lieu of a 100 percent ban on tobacco use. OU has a comprehensive tobacco ban at its Health Science Center and its Tulsa campus.

OU need only look to its neighbor to the north — Oklahoma State University — to learn why such exceptions are unnecessary and subject nonsmokers in the vicinity of these designated smoking areas to potentially dangerous health impacts from secondhand tobacco smoke. OSU enacted a total tobacco ban in 2008, including no cigarettes, cigars, pipes or smokeless tobacco. Ream more »
