trying to quit smoking
Quitting smoking is not an easy thing to do.

Even with moral support and nicotine patches, it usually takes people five or six times before they quit for good, said Timea Taylor is a tobacco reduction counsellor with Alberta Health Services (AHS)

She said that quitting isn’t an easy thing to do, but it can be made easier with some helpful tools. “Technology has allowed us a variety of methods to choose from when trying to quit smoking,” she said. “This allows people to choose the method that best fits with their lifestyle.” Ream more »

campaign for cigarettes
9 in 10 young people in the region think less glamorous packaging would put them off smoking. That’s according to research carried out by Smokefree South West.

It’s thought 200,000 teenagers will start smoking this year by the age of 19 and now the organisation is launching a campaign for cigarettes to be sold in plain packets with more health warnings on to help people kick the habit or put them off before they even start.

Unfortunate but necessary exclusions to smoking ban

workplace smoking
Our lack of a workplace smoking ban in Indiana has become an embarrassment, especially with the Super Bowl looming before us. Even many Republican lawmakers who refused to address the issue for years appear ready to pass something.

There must be a convincing message from business leaders to elected officials that Indianapolis and Indiana are well behind the curve of hundreds of American cities and 29 states that benefit economically from smoke-free laws. Lawmakers may finally understand that convention and other business opportunities may bypass us because of our smoky environments, which visitors from out of state resent.

Tobacco Nigeria
British American Tobacco’s Nigerian subsidiary has a near-monopoly, commanding 80 per cent of the market—but this position has not been achieved without hard work and a positive strategy towards health and economic development.

Though British American Tobacco Nigeria (BATN) was incorporated as an indigenous entity only 10 years ago in 2002, we are now coming up to the centenary of the parent company BAT’s presence in Nigeria. So 2012 will be the occasion for a double celebration among the 14,000 or more Nigerians employed, Ream more »

Ban Tobacco in City
Smokers may soon have fewer places to light up in New Hope. Tobacco use is already banned in city buildings and city vehicles. At Tuesday’s work session, city council members will get their first look at a proposed policy that would extend that ban to most park facilities.

According to City Council documents, the city’s Citizen Advisory Commission proposed the change in October. It then went to city staff who came up with the language. It would add “parkland, park facilities and open space” to the city’s existing tobacco ban. The proposal cites second-hand smoke and discarded cigarette butts as reasons. Ream more »

Campus should be smoke free

designated smoking areas
University of Arizona Medical Center has made its own New Year’s Resolution: banning smoking anywhere near the building. Hallelujah! Smoking should be banned at all hospitals. It’s great one so close to home made this rule. If you work in the medical field, wouldn’t you, of all people, be aware of what smoking does to you? Or, if you were visiting someone in the hospital, why would you go outside and kill yourself a little more by having a cigarette? So now we not only say good bye to the “butt-huts” — which were the designated smoking areas at the hospital — but also to smoking in the parking lot, or in a car on the property.
