India exploring China as new market for tobacco exports

The Tobacco Board, which oversees cultivation, trade and marketing of tobacco in the country, is now exploring options of tobacco exports to China.

A team led by chairman G Kamalavardhan Rao and others had recently visited China to study the market conditions and also to interact with State Trade Monopoly Administration (STMA), the policymaking body of tobacco industry in China. Ream more »

Like many other Americans, I thoroughly enjoyed watching historical documentarian Ken Burns’ recent Prohibition series, on PBS. But I was disappointed by its abrupt end. Burns took the easy way out and didn’t point out that right around the same time the legal federal prohibition on alcohol ended, the prohibition of marijuana was ramping up in a big way. The Department of Health and Human Services released clinical guidelines in 2008 that help physicians provide evidence-based recommendations to patients trying to quit smoking. The main message is that several kinds of treatment – even brief ones – are effective, and a little bit of help can make a difference.

EN students charged with theft, tobacco violation

East Noble students were charged with theft and cited for tobacco possession by a minor in separate incidents reported Friday.

A 14-year-old girl from Kendallville was charged Tuesday with theft at East Noble Middle School following an investigation on Sept. 6, reported East Noble resource officer Sgt. John Dixon on Friday. The case was forwarded to Noble County juvenile probation.

Passengers Admitted to Just Smoking Pot

The police report from a June traffic stop where a man claims he was inappropriately touched by an officer says the two passengers admitted to smoking marijuana just prior to the stop.

Brice Wilson, a 23-year-old Villa Rica man, claims officer K. Moore inappropriately touched his genitals as he was being searched. Powder Springs police are continuing their internal affairs investigation into the matter.

Substance abuse council making anti-smoking video for teens

The Middlesex County Substance Abuse Action Council is teaming up with a production company to shoot a video intended to discourage teens from smoking.

Filming on the video begins Saturday at Agogliatti Field in Portland at 9 a.m.

Portions of the video will also be shot at the Typhoon Restaurant on Main Street in downtown Middletown and at a private home in Middletown, as well as in Portland. Ream more »

It involves gun control and medical marijuana and the political right and the political left.

Most of the focus is on medical marijuana and the Second Amendment where the use of one could prohibit the possession of the other and the debate and potential problems are immeasurable.

Smoking may have been banned in showbiz but most actors pursue the habit without a thought. Be it Ajay Devgn, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan or Shahrukh Khan they have all promised to quit the habit sometime or the other, but only Shahrukh Khan has stepped forward to make the promise with a date. While that came as a shock to many, SRK explains his decision.

The actor says that he will quit smoking after the release of his ambitious project, RA.One. Incidentally, the film has a scene where the actor talks about the ill-effects of smoking. Ream more »
