JC tobacco shop closes after police investigation

JC tobacco shop
One Stop Shop, at 237 Main St., was shut down after the end of a long-term multiagency police investigation into the illegal sale and distribution of untaxed tobacco, the Johnson City Police Department said Friday.

The Johnson City police and New York State Department of Taxation and Finance’s Petroleum, Alcohol and Tobacco Bureau seized a “large quantity” of untaxed tobacco and cigars from the business.

The shop also was found to be employing workers without having workers’ compensation insurance, police said.

As a result of this investigation, numerous other violations were observed in the business, including code violations, fire safety violations, health code violations and other various infractions, police said.

One Stop Shop was issued a stop work notice from the state workers’ compensation board. Criminal charges are pending, police said.

Johnson City police were assisted by the state Taxation and Finance Department, state Workers’ Compensation Board, Johnson City Fire Department, Town of Union Code Enforcement, Broome County Health Department and Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force.
