Defendant had cigarettes for sale at market

Superking cigarettes
A MAN who was in possession of cigarettes for sale at Balbriggan Market was further remanded on continuing bail at last week’s sitting of Balbriggan District Court. Richard Smyth of Drive 2, Muirhevnamore in Dundalk is charged with the sale of 15 cartons of Superking cigarettes and 14 cartons of Rothmans cigarettes at the market on the Naul Road, Balbriggan on November 6th with a loss of revenue to the State of €5,000.

Inspector Kieran Houlihan told the court that the file has now been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions. ‘ This is a revenue issue of untaxed goods,’ said Inspector Houlihan. At a previous sitting of the court, Judge Anthony Halpin remarked that there could be between €15,000 to €20,000 worth of cigarettes if the loss of revenue to the State is €5,000. At last week’s sitting, Judge John Lindsay remanded 21-year-old Smyth on continuing bail to re-appear before the court on February 2nd.
