The Cuban Cigar Club, which opened in Grainger Street last week, is a branch of the Carlisle-based family business which has been running for around 100 years.
The shop, which sells 150-200 varieties of handmade cigars, pipes, lighters and gifts, has just opened after a long search for the right site.
Manager Justin Clayton said: “These specialist retailers are dying out to a large extent. It’s lovely seeing something like this back on the high street. We just felt that central Newcastle was the place.
“Grainger Street was chosen because of its central location. It was the right place at the right time. It is really fabulous, it’s blocks away from people’s preconceptions.
“They’d been looking for a few years. A few places fell through at the last minute.”
The shop’s position mean it has been picking up on the stag weekend trade but Clayton, whose background is in the hospitality and leisure sector, says that he has been surprised by the make-up of the customers so far
