Smokers may soon find even fewer places to light up in Mountain View as a ban on smoking in outdoor dining areas is set to come before the City Council early next year.

A meeting is set for 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 29, for residents to discuss the proposal inside the plaza conference room at City Hall.

The proposed ban would mean no smoking allowed at most outdoor dining areas within city limits, including those of restaurants and picnic areas in public parks. There would also be a 25-foot buffer around areas where smoking would not be permitted.

City laws already prohibit smoking within 30 feet of public playgrounds and state law prohibits smoking inside most public buildings and workplaces.

City staff began working on the proposal after the County awarded the city a grant in November 2010 “to explore and develop a tobacco prevention policy for the city.” The City Council had voted to apply for the grant in early 2010.

The cities of Gilroy, Palo Alto and Sunnyvale are also working on similar ordinances.
