School Boards Association backs tobacco tax initiative

The Missouri School Boards Association voted to support a plan that would raise Missouri’s lowest-in-the-nation cigarette tax from 17 cents per pack to 90 cents beginning in January.

MO School Boards Association Spokesman Brent Ghan said, “We think it’s kind of a tough argument to make that we ought to remain the lowest tobacco tax in the country when we continue to struggle to find new revenue to fund public education and other things that we need here in the State of Missouri.”

Students, faculty react to new TSUS policy banning tobacco use

A new campus-wide tobacco policy has been put into effect that prohibits the use of all tobacco products on Sam Houston State University grounds.
The policy went into effect June 1 and bans the use of cigarettes, cigars, pipes, smokeless tobacco and all other tobacco products, and applies to all students, faculty, staff, employees of contractors and visitors of SHSU. Ream more »

Zimbabwe nets USD95 million from tobacco exports

Zimbabwe earned US$95 million from tobacco exports in the first half of the year, an industry representative group said on Saturday. In a statement, the Tobacco Industry Marketing Board said the bulk of the crop was exported to China, with South Africa in second place.

It said as of 1 June, 2012, the country had exported a total of 23.2 million kilogrammes of tobacco, mainly to Asian and European countries.

ATF agents stop at Scranton tobacco business

Agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives on Tuesday were at a South Scranton tobacco business conducting an investigation, city Police Chief Dan Duffy said.

Agents spent part of the day at the 1111 S. Washington Ave. business, though the chief said he was not privy to the details of their probe or what they were looking for.
