Savannah Martinez is a teenager who has strong opinions about cigarettes and smoking. She said, “It’s really bad for people, so I wouldn’t do it.”
That is all thanks to her mom, Stephanie Molina. She said, “I do it but, I tell her, don’t do it, it’s not good, you know.”

Cook County might raise alcohol tax, extend tobacco tax

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle is calling for more taxes on alcohol and tobacco products. Under her proposal, smokeless tobacco and cigars will be taxed the same as cigarettes. As for alcohol, taxes would go up by 50 percent in Cook County. That would add a few cents on beer and wine and not much more on hard liquor.

At a news conference Wednesday morning, Preckwinkle was flanked by medical specialists and experts as she touted the public health benefits of such taxes. Ream more »

Tobacco shops near schools on hit list

In a survey conducted by an NGO in city schools found that 82% of schools have tobacco and tobacco product selling shops in the radius of 100 yards. The sale of tobacco products in the radius of 100 yards is prohibited and punishable. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) hasplanned adrive to stop this menace.
Minister of state of FDA Satej Patil held a review meeting on Wednesday to take stock of the implementation of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Regulation Act (COTPA) under which action is taken against the shopkeepers selling tobacco products in the vicinity of the schools. Ream more »

Shops fined for selling tobacco products near schools

As many as 20 shops from around five educational institutions in the city were fined after they were found selling tobacco products in raids conducted on Thursday.

The raids were conducted by the district health department in association with the Narcotics Cell of the police under the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act 2003 (COTPA). Ream more »

Program urges smokers switch to smokeless tobacco

In the smoker-heavy state of Kentucky, a cancer center is suggesting something that most health experts won’t and the tobacco industry can’t: If you really want to quit, switch to smoke-free tobacco.
The James Graham Brown Cancer Center and the University of Louisville are aiming their “Switch and Quit” campaign at the city of Owensboro. It uses print, radio, billboard and other advertising to urge smokers to swap their cigarettes for smokeless tobacco and other products that do not deliver nicotine by smoke. Ream more »

Police on Monday warned women not to be alone on a popular walking and biking trail in Durham after four incidents of indecent exposure occurred within eight days on the trail.

The reported flashing incidents occurred on Oct. 23 and again Friday, Saturday and Sunday on the American Tobacco Trail in southern Durham, police said. The description of the culprit is fairly similar in all four cases – a white man in his 30s or 40s and about 6 feet tall.

British American Tobacco PLC said Wednesday it remains on track for a year of good earnings growth as the world’s second-biggest tobacco group by revenue posted a rise in nine-month sales, but volumes fell as smokers struggle with tough global economic conditions.

“While the challenging economic conditions continued to impact consumers in some markets, other markets are showing signs of recovery. Excise-driven price increases in a few markets will continue to affect industry volumes,” Chief Executive Nicandro Durante said in a statement. Ream more »

Lobangclub to remove tobacco products and prices from app

The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) has asked the developers of Lobangclub to remove information on tobacco products and prices from its iPhone app that offers information on deals contributed by shoppers.

In an e-mail to users, Lobangclub founder Shen Guyi said he was contacted by a HSA officer who warned him that it is illegal to advertise tobacco in Singapore. As Lobangclub has up to today to remove all tobacco related material from the app, Shen urged users to stop contributing tobacco related deals.

Senior caught with illegal cigarettes in Angus drug bust

The Nottawasaga OPP executed a search warrant for a drug investigation in a residence on North Street in Angus on Oct. 13.

During the course of the investigation, police seized a quantity of marijuana, 27,680 illegal cigarettes, oxycocet pills and cash. A 73-year-old Essa Township resident has been charged with possession of a controlled substance (marijuana) for the purpose of trafficking, and possess a controlled substance (oxycocet) under the Controlled Drugs and Substance Act.
