Public housing to go smoke free in 2013

The Fort Wayne Housing Authority has approved a policy change that will prohibit smoking in all public housing units beginning Jan. 1, 2013.

Residents in Fort Wayne began receiving official notifications Thursday and residents will begin signing lease addendums that are due Dec. 31. Ream more »

Cook County cigarette tax proposal may add $1 per pack

Evanston smokers may start paying $1 extra for a pack of cigarettes if a new proposal from the Cook County board president passes.
Members of the Illinois General Assembly agreed to the proposal, which taxes cigarettes at $1.98 a pack. That amount is 98 cents more than the current tax.
State officials say Illinois hopes to earn $350 million with this proposal. Ream more »

People should stop smoking, not only for themselves but for all of the population around them as well. Walking to class through OU’s College Green and getting pegged in the face with a huge aroma of smoke is not something I enjoy. I also do not like walking out of a building and the doorway being flooded with smoke because people do not follow the law of smoking a certain distance away from buildings and public places. Maybe you do not mind ruining your lungs, but as a young healthy, nursing student, I would like to preserve mine. Ream more »

Can Facebook Make You Quit Smoking?

That could change after the release last week of an article suggesting that the power of the social-network behemoth could be harnessed to help influence our behavior for the better—for example, by helping smokers quit.

Foyle MP Mark Durkan is calling for more action and support to help smokers in Derry quit for good.

A new report by research agency IMS Consulting has found that attempts to quit smoking and motivation to quit are in decline. However, the British Government has set a target for reducing the prevalence of smoking which requires 210,000 people to quit every year until 2015. Ream more »

The district-level awareness programme on the ill-effects of tobacco was held on Thursday at the Aluva Taluk Hospital to mark the World No Tobacco Day. M.T. Jacob, chairman, Aluva Municipal Council, inaugurated the programme.

Childhood exposure to passive smoking have long-term hazards

Children exposed to secondhand smoke are more likely to suffer from chronic cough in adulthood, a new study has claimed, giving one more reason why one should stop smoking at home.

A University of Arizona team which analysed the results of 24-year-long study found that non-smokers who were exposed to passive smoking during their childhood had a higher risk of developing chronic chest infections.
