TRU Wishes Schools Another Tobacco-Free Year

Tobacco-Free Year
Washington- Beaufort County Schools (BCS) has entered its fourth tobacco-free school year. No individual may use or possess any tobacco products on BCS property.

The tobacco-free school policy applies to all school system property, including BCS vehicles. The policy also includes all school-sponsored events, both on and off-campus. Students, staff and visitors are encouraged to comply with this policy.

Smoke Free Horry presents survey findings

Smoke Free Horry presented findings from a recent survey of tourists at the North Myrtle Beach library Tuesday. In the survey, 94% of those polled considered secondhand smoke a health hazard.
72 % said it was important to them to dine in a restaurant or bar that is smoke free.

69% were more likely to select a vacation destination that has a smoke free law.

Only 41% said a smoke free ordinance would make them think of Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach as more family friendly.

District declared smoke-free

Ernakulam was declared the first smoke-free tourism destination in the country on Saturday.

Excise Minister K. Babu inaugurated the function held at Marine Drive to mark the declaration.

He said that the declaration was testimony to the district administration’s ability to replicate its achievement in the field of literacy in the public health sector as well.

An undercover investigation has exposed the widespread sale of counterfeit and smuggled cigarettes at shops in East Sussex. Counterfeit and smuggled cigarettes are being sold in High Street shops in Sussex, a BBC investigation has found. Covert filming uncovered the illegal trade in four stores in Hastings in East Sussex. The Tobacco Retailers Alliance (TRA) said counterfeit cigarettes put the health of smokers at a greater risk because they did not meet UK standards.

Cigarette smuggling costs states billions

Many state governments are struggling to make ends meet, and many are laying off cops and teachers.
CBS News correspondent Bob Orr reports that, as a result, some states are losing billions of dollars to smugglers in an illegal trade that can be more profitable than drug dealing.

On Interstate 95, at the Virginia-Maryland border, CBS News observed police closing in on a suspected smuggler. He was not running drugs, but something even more profitable.

Cigarette sales at stores rise follow vending ban

Convenience stores in England are reporting moderate rises in their tobacco sales following the ban on tobacco vending machines, which came into force on October 1.

It is now illegal for pubs, clubs, hotels, cafés and bookmakers in England to sell tobacco products from vending machines. The law is as yet unchanged in the rest of the UK, although Scotland and Wales are expected to implement similar bans next year.

Oklahoma smoking rate reaches historic low

Health statistics show the state had 100,000 fewer adult smokers from 2001 to 2010, according to a survey analysis released Tuesday.
At a time when Oklahoma often comes out on the wrong end of studies and surveys, the executive director of the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust said she and other health authorities are encouraged by the results.
“It’s a wonderful day. I hoped we would see this day,” said Tracey Strader, executive director of the organization. Ream more »

The Tobacco Free program at Ostara Campbelltown is for people who are living with mental illness who would like to quit or reduce their smoking.

This group meets for 2 hours each Thursday starting from October 13th 2011. There are 10 two hour sessions and each session is split into 2 sections. The first section is where you with learn information and skills that will help you with your smoking. The second section is a support group where you will receive support and ideas from other group members and have the opportunity to share your journey. Ream more »

The price of cigarettes in Slovenia will go up on Saturday

The price of cigarettes in Slovenia will go up on Saturday as part of an increase in excise duty on tobacco. The best selling brand will be 10 cents dearer at EUR 2.8 a pack, a rise of 3.7%, wholesaler Tobacna Ljubljana said reports Slovenia Times. The price hike is in line with last year’s changes to the excise duties act, which already raised the excise from EUR 77 to EUR 80 per 1,000 cigarettes in April. Ream more »

‘China willing to resume tobacco trading with India’

The Indian tobacco industry is eyeing China as a potential importer of Flue Cured Virginia (FCV) grown in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. A delegation of Tobacco Board officials and traders, led by Board Chairman G. Kamala Vardhana Rao, recently visited China to study the farming, curing and trading patterns of tobacco.

Sharing the details of the four-day trip with journalists here on Monday, Mr. Rao said the China Tobacco Monopoly Administration (CTMA), the nodal agency, has expressed its willingness to resume tobacco trading with India.
