Tyler Durden, the antagonist of “Fight Club” (1999) played by Brad Pitt, tosses his cigarette on the ground nine times throughout the film. Besides encouraging pollution, these scenes could also play a major role in the onset of teen smoking, according to a new study by researchers at the Geisel School of Medicine.
Teen smoking can be reduced significantly if movies featuring smoking scenes are rated R, according to the study published earlier this month. Ream more »

Approximately 340 young people die each year as a result of smoking. While it is a sad reality, the truth is that today’s adolescents are being bombarded with images of smokers being portrayed in a glamorous light. Our youth are seeing these images, particularly in movies, and are beginning to see cigarettes in a more positive manner, falling prey to the trap set by Big Tobacco companies.

A study shows that in the past year, fewer Oklahoma tobacco outlets are selling to minors.

Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services reported the results of its annual inspection of tobacco outlets to measure compliance with laws restricting underage tobacco sales showed this year’s rate to be lowest for the state ever. Ream more »

The U.S. has the second-lowest percentage of teens that smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol among their counterparts in 36 European countries, Counsel & Heal reports.

Comparing a European study that closely resembles the University of Michigan’s Monitoring the Future survey, the data revealed “dramatic” differences between adolescent behaviors in the U.S. and Europe, according to Lloyd Johnston, a lead investigator for the U.S. survey. Ream more »

Cops Crack Down on Underage Tobacco Sales

After receiving several complaints from residents, Evergreen Park Police cracked down on gas station employees who were reportedly selling tobacco to minors.

NC youth smoking rates hit all-time low

The percentage of teens in North Carolina who smoke cigarettes reached a new low in 2011, the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services announced May 17.

The 2011 NC Youth Tobacco Survey finds that the high school smoking rate lowered to 15.5 percent from 16.7 percent in 2009, and the middle school smoking rate dropped to 4.2 percent from 4.3 percent in 2009.
