The clock is ticking for a Rapid City hookah bar to comply with the statewide smoking ban. Ifrits Hookah Lounge has until April 29 to either stop serving alcohol or put away the water pipes. If not, police will start writing tickets. The downtown Rapid City lounge opened in 2010.

Vivek Oberoi Busted at Mumbai Hookah Bar

Indian actor Vivek Oberoi and 23 others have been booked under the Tobacco Act following a surprise check in a restaurant at suburban Vile Parle, where cops stumbled upon hookah smoking, the use of which is banned in public areas, police said Mar. 30.

The 35-year-old actor, who is incidentally the ambassador for the World Health Organization’s anti-smoking movement, denied smoking hookah but a probe will find the truth, police said. Ream more »

Home minister RR Patil, who shut down dance bars in the state, is now contemplating a complete ban on hookah parlours.

“The existing fine for serving hookahs is just Rs1,200. It’s not a deterrent. If you raid a [hookah] joint, the owners are ready with the fine money. We don’t want the youth to gamble away their futures over such an addiction because of sheer mmaturity,” said Patil. Ream more »

12 local and international youth volunteers prowled the lanes of Kampong Glam on Friday evening to spread the word on the harmful effects of shisha smoking.

This is part of the Health Promotion Board’s (HPB) first shisha awareness programme in Singapore.

Youth volunteers Camelia Tang and Ridzwan Rahmad are members of the ‘Live It Up Without Lighting Up’ Global Movement, an initiative that aims to empower young people to adopt smoke-free lifestyles. Ream more »

While the central government, based on a Supreme Court direction, has banned the sale of cigarettes within a radius of 100 yards of schools and colleges to discourage children from taking to the vicious habit, a city snooker club on Residency Road was found caring two hoots about the rules while running a hookah bar exclusively for the schoolchildren on Residency Road.

At least 60 students were found in the hookah bar on Monday afternoon. Some schoolchildren (wearing uniforms) were caught smoking hookahs. Ream more »

Dubai’s residential areas will be off-limits for the carcinogenic smoke of shishas, according to local press reports, today, Tuesday.

Multiple independent studies have proven that smoking one ‘head’ of shisha (the amount of flavored tobacco in the cup) is equivalent to smoking two packs of cigarettes, in regard to tar and nicotine intake.

The sweet smell of the flavored tobacco, and the pleasant bubbling sounds of the water pipe deceptively mask proven health risks. Ream more »

A Bradford shisha lounge has been refused a licence to hold a late-night Valentine’s ball this weekend.

Shaid Iqbal had hoped to host the event for couples at the Marhaba Lounge in Thornton Road, which he runs.

He applied to Bradford Council for a temporary event notice to allow entertainment and refreshments until 3am on Saturday, February 18. But his bid drew objections from police licensing officers who feared “unlawful activities” had taken place at the lounge in January when a private party was being held there. The police used their powers to close the venue that night and investigations are continuing.

LHC seeks report on implementation of anti-smoking law

The Lahore High Court has sought a report from the Punjab home secretary and inspector general police on a writ petition seeking implementation of an anti-smoking law.
Justice Umar Ata Bandial, who was hearing a petition saying that the Prohibition of Smoking and Protection of Non-Smokers Health Ordinance 2002 was neither effective nor properly implemented, ordered on Thursday that respondents file their replies by March 13. Ream more »

Planners endorse nightclub status for hookah bar

A hookah bar may run as a nightclub but shouldn’t sell alcohol on site, the planning commission recommended Tuesday.

Owners of Ali Baba Hookah Bar, 923 Berryville Ave., sought a conditional use permit for a nightclub to allow live music and karaoke.

The owners also sought to revise the original permit, approved in May, to remove a restriction on the sale of alcoholic beverages.
