On Monday, City University of New York forbade smoking entirely on all their campuses. They joined at least 466 other campuses in this endeavor.
Nationwide, universities are working to promote healthier student lifestyles.
College life has often been connected with harmful behavior like smoking, excessive drinking and drug abuse. Authorities hope that the ban will discourage students who smoke from continuing to do so. It is also intended to decrease the amount of second-hand smoke on their campuses. Ream more »

NY Bill Would Ban ‘E-Cigarettes’ Until FDA Action

Backers of electronic cigarettes are watching legislation that could make New York the first state in the nation to ban the devices widely advertised on the Internet as a way to help quit smoking.

A new year comes with new resolutions. Some people may have decided to eat healthier and some may have decided to quit smoking. There is good news for potential cigarette quitters who live in Great Neck, NY. Smoking has now been banned on the public sidewalks outside of businesses.

On Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011 the Great Neck Village Board approved the smoking ban on the public sidewalks leaving smokers in disbelief. If caught, smokers could receive a fine of up to $1,000. Ream more »

Call for smoking ban in all cars carrying children

A CHARITY will today call on people to pledge their support for a smoking ban in all private cars carrying children. The British Lung Foundation Wales has promised to redouble its efforts to campaign for an extension to the current smoking ban in a bid to protect children’s lungs. The campaign follows Wales’ chief medical officer Dr Tony Jewell’s support for further restrictions on smoking – he is the first CMO in the UK to call for such a ban. Ream more »

Despite heated arguments leading up to a proposal to prohibit smoking in bars and restaurants, officials said the state’s indoor smoking ban took effect with few problems this year.
On Jan. 2, customers could no longer light up over dinner or drinks when the Tobacco Road state joined a growing number of states implementing restrictions about smoking in workplaces.

The South Dakota Legislature does have the authority to amend the new smoking ban that was approved by voters Nov. 2. That’s the view of Kea Warne, the elections supervisor in the South Dakota Secretary of State’s Office. While municipal governments have to wait a year to amend laws enacted by voters, Warne said, state laws created by the Legislature or the public can be altered by lawmakers at any time. Ream more »

Anti-smoking groups are urging Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq to stick with her department’s plans to increase the size of warning labels on cigarette packages, rather than capitulate to the tobacco industry.

“The research commissioned by your department shows clearly that the larger the warning, the greater the positive impact it will have on its intended target audiences,” eight of the organizations said Wednesday in a letter to Ms. Aglukkaq. Ream more »

Share of household spending on alcohol, cigarettes drops

The ratio of Koreans’ spending on alcohol and cigarettes to their total spending fell to a record low in the third quarter as people grew concerned about their health, data showed Monday.

Koreans’ expenditures on alcohol and cigarettes reached 3.49 trillion won ($3.08 billion) on a seasonally adjusted basis in the July-September period, accounting for 2.35 percent of their total consumption spending, according to data by the Bank of Korea. In the cited period, total households’ expenditures stood at 148.6 trillion won. Ream more »
