Marijuana farm suspects to be sentenced

Five men arrested last year at a marijuana farm northwest of Veyo are scheduled to be sentenced Monday in St. George’s federal court.

Antonio Garcia-Huitron, 30; Rodrigo Arellano-Gurrola, 31; Ramiro Jose-Quiroz, 21; Eustolio Soto-Ortiz, 20; and Alfonso Perez-Serrato, 31, all have been described as Mexican nationals who were among about three dozen people recruited to help harvest the drug plants at a mountainous cultivation site about five miles north of Gunlock, although three of the men provided a St. George address at the time of their arrest.

No competing marijuana measure for Imperial Beach

The Imperial Beach City Council voted 3-2 Wednesday against a city-prepared ballot measure that would have competed in the November election with a citizen-drafted measure to repeal the city’s ban on medical marijuana dispensaries.

Council members voted 4-1 on July 18 to put the Safe Access Ordinance of Imperial Beach on the ballot in response to a petition containing more than 1,000 residents’ signatures, but Councilman Edward Spriggs suggested that the city also draft its own alternative measure to allow and regulate dispensaries. Bri’onte Dunn arrived at Ohio State in January with a five-star pedigree and the prospect of early playing time. But the heralded freshman running back is not helping his case.

Dunn, a Canton GlenOak graduate, was charged with possession of marijuana among four misdemeanors after a weekend traffic stop outside his hometown, becoming the latest Ohio State player to test first-year coach Urban Meyer’s hard-line stance on discipline this offseason. Ream more »

Marijuana grower sentenced to nearly four years in prison

A man who was growing marijuana on public land in Tulare County with the intention to distribute was sentenced in Fresno on Monday.

Juan Luis Quintero-Pimentel, 21, from Mexico, was sentenced to three years, 10 months in state prison for conspiring to grow, distribute and possess with intent to distribute marijuana gown on public land, U.S. attorney Benjamin B. Wagner said. Ream more »

New Poll Shows Washington Marijuana Reform Initiative

Saturday, the polling firm SurveyUSA released the results of a recent statewide poll that showed 55 percent of Washington voters supporting marijuana regulation in the form of Initiative 502 while only 32 percent opposed. The poll, conducted July 16-17, surveyed 630 registered voters and carries a margin of error of +/- 4%.
