Should Washington legalize marijuana?

I do not personally support or condone the use of marijuana. However, as a 27-year veteran of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, I believe it is time to reform our marijuana laws. The prohibition of the purchase and possession of small amounts of marijuana by adults has caused more harm than good. Like alcohol Prohibition did in the last century, marijuana prohibition has enriched criminal organizations and compromised public safety here and abroad.

Montana medical marijuana provider found guilty of drug trafficking

A jury on Thursday convicted a medical marijuana provider of drug trafficking and firearms charges, upholding the U.S. government’s raids of state-regulated pot dispensaries in its first test at trial.

The provider, Chris Williams, was barred by the trial judge from making the case that he and Montana Cannabis followed the state medical marijuana law that voters approved in 2004. Ream more »

Yuba County marijuana dispute turns into brawl

A fight over marijuana ended when a Linda man beat two men with a large tree branch, the Yuba County Sheriff’s Department said Thursday.

Cole L. Younger, 49, was booked into the Yuba County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. He posted a $30,000 bail bond and was released a short time later.

Once a year, the Federal government conducts a confidential, anonymous survey to detect trends in the nation’s drug use. For 2011, the results are in and they’re what Dr. Peter Delany calls “some mixed results.” Delany is director of the group that organizes the survey, the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment. Your Sept. 3 article regarding a Lakeland native now working in Colorado’s marijuana industry fails to accurately represent what is really happening.

Colorado legalized marijuana as a so-called medicine in 2000. They have more than 99,000 “patients.” Pain is the most common condition cited with 94 percent of users. The more life-threatening conditions listed in your article, such as cancer, HIV/AIDS and glaucoma only represent a combined 5 percent. Ream more »

City looks to extend marijuana dispensary ban

City Council members will consider extending a moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries when they meet Tuesday.

The council adopted an ordinance to prohibit medical marijuana dispensaries within the city in 2005, but replaced that law in October 2011 with an ordinance prohibiting dispensaries for one year. Ream more »

Teenagers hear a lot of rumors. And one of them – marijuana use is not harmful to overall health – has just been disproven, according to a study published Aug. 27 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
