Namibia Observes World No-tobacco Day On May 31

World No-Tobacco Day 2010 themes “Gender and Tobacco, with an emphasis on marketing to Women” will be nationally commerated in Namibia on May 31, this year, the Namibian Press Agency (NAMPA).
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Social Services, Kahijoro Kahuure said this year’s theme is selected in recognition of the effects of tobacco on the health of women, and will also be part of a global movement to make people’s bodies free from tobacco smoke. Read more

Tobacco farmers rally against `extinction’

Nine tobacco producing regencies in Central Java are lobbying the government to influence proposed anti-smoking regulations, according to Temanggung Regent Hasyim Afandi.
“It’s not a political move. We just want to protect tobacco farmers. I’ve talked to Magelang and Wonosobo Regents. They agreed. The others will follow,” Hasyim said after joining a mass prayer attended by about 10,000 tobacco farmers at Temanggung Square on Saturday. Read more

Within the Facebook community the groups such as “Moms for Marijuana” and “Baby Boomers for Medical Marijuana” have as their primary goal educating people, challenging the preconceived ideas and battling ignorance with the only effective weapon against it – Knowledge. In prisons, tobacco is turning into gold

Clark Kent’s post-office box in Dublin was routinely filled with envelopes containing money – reportedly thousands of dollars.
Kent took the money, used some of it to buy tobacco and smuggled it into the Pickaway Correctional Institution near Orient, southwest of Columbus. Tobacco is banned in all state prisons, making it the top contraband item – above even marijuana and other drugs. Read more

I have never taken even one puff of a cigarette, which is how I’ve always known that smoking is cool. However, my faith in that assumption is weakened every time I walk by an office building. All those people shivering outside in their little smoking leper colony replaces the James Dean-era image of motorcycle freedom with one of Henry Ford-era dirty workers taking their elevenses with bourbon from the factory store. USPS Issues Tobacco Mailing Rules

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) earlier this week published a Notice of Proposed Rule to implement the provisions of the PACT Act, which prohibits the mailing of cigarettes, roll-your-own tobacco and smokeless tobacco, according to a report by the National Association of Tobacco Outlets (NATO).
