One local business is banking on the fact that smokers will be looking for alternatives to cigarettes, either to avoid the new warning labels, or to avoid increasingly stringent smoking bans.

Health experts yesterday warned against the use of sisha and the so-called e-cigarettes, claiming the devices are no different from real cigarettes in nicotine content.

Dr. Susan Mercado, regional adviser for Tobacco-Free Initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO)-Western Pacific Region Office, said sisha was proven to be harmful to health in a lot of international studies.
“One hour of sisha exposure is equivalent to 100 cigarettes. It’s quite toxic. It looks like it’s not harmful but it is harmful,” Mercado stressed. Ream more »

Leonardo DiCaprio has been seen with one. So have Katherine Heigl and Lindsay Lohan.
The goodie isn’t a multimillion-dollar film contract but an electronic cigarette, or “e-cig.”
E-cigs have been on the market for nearly seven years, but their appearance in the Hollywood spotlight hints at a newfound popularity. “I’ve seen it around a lot and have been curious about it,” says Maxine Jean-Louis, 24, a case worker from Columbia Heights.

Kanawha-Charleston Health Director Rahul Gupta is not a fan of electronic cigarettes, an increasingly popular alternative for smokers.
However, Gupta says e-cigarettes are not covered under Kanawha County’s Clean Indoor Air Ordinance.
Users can puff away in bars, restaurants and video lottery parlors.
At least for now.

An e-cigarette is a contraption with a nicotine cartridge placed in a device that resembles a cigarette. A battery powers the device that vaporizes the cartridge.
The nicotine then is inhaled just like cigarette smoke, giving the smoker the same sensation as when a cigarette is burned. However, the device does not produce any smoke. The user exhales water vapor instead.

Health Department backs off total ban on e-cigarettes

After hearing from the public about its proposed ban on e-cigarettes in all public places in the county, the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department has backed off – at least slightly.

Lindsay Lohan may be making over every aspect of her life as she has reportedly taken up smoking electronic cigarettes.

Blu Cigs reportedly released images of Lohan under house arrest using the electronic cigarettes, states TMZ.

Thad Mamey fondly remembers the early days of electronic cigarettes: The puzzled stares. Lighting up indoors. The utter lack of smoke. The difference between his puff of vapor and other smokers plumes.

During the past 12 months, your Better Business Bureau has received hundreds of complaints from people across the country who thought they were getting free e-cigarette trials. In the end, they lost hundreds of dollars in recurring credit or debit card charges.
