More bad news for e-cigarettes

Electronic cigarettes (or e-cigarettes) are marketed as a safer alternative to smoking, but US researchers recently evaluated the safety of five e-cigarette brands and gave them all the red light.
The products release a nicotine vapor into the lungs and are sold as a means to help smokers quit their habit. Researchers at the University of California, Riverside, tested five brands and “found design flaws, lack of adequate labeling, and several concerns about quality control and health issues,” according to a December 3 press release. The results of the study were published in the December issue of the journal Tobacco Control.

E-Cigarettes Can’t Be Regulated as Drug

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cannot control electronic cigarettes as if they were a drug, the U.S. Court of Appeals ruled yesterday, Bloomberg reports. The agency lost its appeal after the appeals court upheld a lower court ruling on the matter.

The court case reiterates that the FDA has the authority to control e-cigarettes only as tobacco products. Electronic cigarette companies, including Sottera (NJoy brand) argued in their lawsuit that e-cigs are not drugs, merely a form of tobacco.

Bahrain may ban e-cigarettes

Bahrain could eventually outlaw the sale of e-cigarettes, according to a senior health official. They are just as harmful as normal cigarettes, but a ban would only be introduced if a consensus was reached at GCC level, said primary care and public health assistant under-secretary Dr Mariam Al Jalahma. ‘The only difference is that e-cigarettes do not produce smoke,’ she told our sister newspaper Gulf Daily News (GDN) in reaction to reports that e-cigarettes had been banned in the UAE.
