‘E-cigarette’ distributor settles with California, says it won’t target minors

Smoking Everywhere, the largest distributor of electronic cigarettes in the U.S., has agreed not to market its product to minors or claim they’re a safe alternative to smoking under a settlement with the California Attorney General.

The settlement comes two months after the state reached a similar agreement with electronic cigarette maker Soterra.

A few weeks ago my daughter and I were at the mall doing some back-to-school shopping and walked by a kiosk selling what looked like cigarettes. We both thought it was odd, but we assumed it must be some type of “quit smoking” device. Can cigarettes really be green? As smoke-free laws sweep the United States, companies are selling electronic cigrarettes that emit vapor — not smoke, and one’s pitching them as eco-friendly.
Green Smoke, a North Miami Beach-based company, says it “aspires to create a greener planet” by offering a cigarette that has no second-hand smoke, no ash and no risk of fire.
“It contains no tar, carbon monoxide and other dangerous toxins,” the company says of its cigarette, adding it provides nicotine “without taking a toll on your lungs and heart.” Ream more »

Debate over e-Cigarettes

e-cigarettesCHICAGO, June 24 — Recently in Chicago, there have been moves to ban electronic cigarettes, more commonly known as e-cigarettes. The Illinois State Senate passed legislation that would have prevented the sale of e-cigarettes, but it was overturned at the Illinois State House. The fact that they were almost banned – as they are in Missouri and Illinois – has upset people on both sides of the issue.
For those who are against electronic cigarettes, the legislation being stopped was a bad thing because of safety concerns surrounding electronic cigarettes. While there are currently no regulations in place for electronic cigarettes, some people say no regulations are needed and that e-cigs are safer than traditional cigarettes.
