My pregnant granddaughter smokes. She has switched to electronic cigarettes, telling her husband that these are completely safe and will not affect the baby in any way. She also claims there is no danger of secondhand smoke.

I say if you are sucking into your lungs any vapor with nicotine, it will affect the unborn child. And when you exhale, there has to be some nicotine when it comes out. Electronic cigarettes, which many people use to kick their smoking habit, are growing in popularity in New Brunswick and there’s some debate on whether or not they’re safe.

Electronic — or e-cigarettes — produces a vapour that is scent-free and tobacco-free. Some are even nicotine-free.

Health Canada told stores to pull the ones with nicotine off their shelves in 2009, and still hasn’t given approval for anyone to sell them.

Linn County Supervisors took a step this week toward regulating the sale of nicotine delivery systems and other products containing nicotine not covered by state law.

Supervisors are expected to approve second and third readings of the ordinance — which would require retailers to have a tobacco permit to sell “nicotine delivery systems and unregulated products containing nicotine,” and ban selling the items to minors — before month’s-end.

An e cigarette is a device which tastes and looks just like a regular cigarette but in reality it is poles apart from its predecessor. A major difference between both products is the lack of tobacco content in an electronic cigarette. On the other hand, a regular cigarette has ample quantities of tobacco in it.
