While many of his classmates at Freehold Township High School were deciding where they wanted to go after graduation, Jim Moretti III said he knew that more than anything else he wanted to start his own business.

With the help of his parents, that dream was realized eight years ago when they opened Lite-Em Up Cigars in a small shop on the southbound side of Route 9. Having gained an interest in cigars at an early age, Moretti said getting into the business was an easy decision for him and his father. Ream more »

Cigar and pipe smokers and those who like to chew their tobacco would have to pay Chicago’s cigarette tax, under a crackdown proposed Wednesday to stave off budget cuts impacting libraries, mental health centers and 911 dispatch.

Aldermen Leslie Hairston (5th) and Matt O’Shea (19th) want to follow the Cook County Board’s lead and close a legal loophole that has allowed all tobacco products other than cigarettes to escape the city’s sin tax.

Trendsettah USA, Inc., a California-based company, is promoting flavored cigars called Hoodwraps to inner-city youth, a practice that has upset members of the community.
Some Hoosiers at a downtown gas station were approached by the Trendsettah street team on Thursday.
“It’s dirty. I think it’s a dirty thing to do,” resident Unique Woods said. “Why would they be on the streets handing out cigars? I’m very shocked.”

Cigar Review: Paul Garmirian Artisan’s Passion Toro

October 7th, 2011 Posted in Cigars Tags:

Artisan’s Selection cigar
A quick look through our reviews archive and you’ll see that Paul Garmirian cigars have been a favorite of ours. And personally, living only 15 minutes from their home shop, I appreciate my ready access to all their blends (including cigars with nearly 20 years of age), which in many areas are tough to find.

So I was excited to learn earlier this year that PG was coming out with a new blend called Artisan’s Passion. The blend is a “sister cigar” to PG’s Artisan’s Selection cigar, and like the Artisan’s Selection it aims to provide the PG experience in a more value-conscious offering.

Boulder cigar festival sparks up fun and friendship

Boulder cigar festival
Smoking has always been a communal activity. Whether in the boardroom or at the pub, smokers are social animals who prefer to light up in the company of others.

However, in recent years, the backlash against Big Tobacco has forced smokers to go underground. Instead of sitting comfortably in the smoking section at their favorite restaurant, smokers can now be found huddling in the alleys behind restaurants, shivering while they bemoan the latest cigarette tax hikes and swap stories about the good ol’ days. Cigar of the Day—Tatuaje Lancero (Brown Label)

August 30th, 2011 Posted in Cigars Tags:

Tatuaje cigars
Exiting out of my comfort zone, I went to a place I never thought I would find myself — with a Lancero. A Lancero is, traditionally, a 38 x 7.5″ cigar — long and thin and all together not looking anything like a cigar at all. It’s a skinny Churchill. It’s far too European. Interestingly enough, the Lancero size is one of the most popular sizes in Europe. In America, we think it’s effeminate…in Europe, it’s dignified.

Adult-Only cigars
Watch City Cigar is officially an adult-only establishment, after working out the arrangement with the Board of Health.

“It’s a really big weight off our shoulders to not let kids in,” said Watch City Cigar manager Ernest Quintiliani.

The Board of Health had previously cited Watch City for leaving its humidors open, a violation of state law if children are allowed on the premises. At the July 18 Board of Health meeting, a lawyer for Watch City proposed changing the store to over-18 status.

Is the high-end cigar industry saving some of Connecticut’s best biking country?

August 23rd, 2011 Posted in Cigars Tags:

cigar industry
I’m feeling guilty about this. As an ex-nicotine addict, I detest Big Tobacco’s cancer industry. But as a cyclist, I’ve reluctantly decided I’m willing to sacrifice the wealthy idiots who smoke high-priced cigars if it will save the Tobacco Valley farmlands where I love to ride.

Connecticut is losing thousands of acres of farmland and forest to development every year, but it turns out the amount of land devoted to growing high-priced cigar tobacco has actually increased in the last decade.
