Nicolas Sarkozy smoke cigarThe timing of Nicolas Sarkozy’s latest embarrassment is rather tasty. On the day that he has asked the French to work two more years before retirement, one of his ministers has been caught spending 12,000 euros a year of tax-payers’ money on cigars.
The disclosure about Christian Blanc, State Secretary (sub-minister) for Greater Paris, is the most amusing in the recent exposés on the royal life-style of France’s governing class. When Blanc heard that he was to become the latest victim of Le Canard, he sent the Treasury a cheque for 3,500 euros to refund the “two boxes of 25″ which he said he personally smokes every month. He says he has no idea where the 8,500 euros worth of other cigars went.
