The district-level awareness programme on the ill-effects of tobacco was held on Thursday at the Aluva Taluk Hospital to mark the World No Tobacco Day. M.T. Jacob, chairman, Aluva Municipal Council, inaugurated the programme.
District Medical Officer R. Sudhakaran and cardiologist Jaideep Menon held a class on the occasion.
A CD developed by Dr. Menon on harmful effects of tobacco use was released. C.M. Hyder Ali, the Madhya Mekhala president of Indian Medical Association, spoke on the occasion.
Dr. Shanta Kumari, the district RCH Officer, led the pledge for the occasion. Haseena Mohammed, deputy DMO, welcomed the gathering and Dr. Subaida, superintendent, Aluva Hospital, proposed vote of thanks.
A rally was held inside the hospital premises with nursing students in the hospital and the nearby private hospitals taking part.
The district unit of the National Rural Health Programme had provided funds to 409 sub centres of primary health centres to observe the World No Tobacco Day by holding rallies, community awareness programmes and opening of clinics for non-communicable diseases.
Various programmes were organised by the Anti-Tobacco Movement at Amrita (ATMA) to mark the World No Tobacco day was inaugurated by M. R. Ajith Kumar, the City Police Commissioner. He led the pledge against tobacco for the students gathered on the occasion.
Cine actor Amala Paul was the chief guest on the occasion. Classes were held by experts on dangerous health effects of tobacco use. Students also held a variety of programmes including skits conveying the message of the harmful effects of tobacco.
