In Hattiesburg, 253 Mississippi teenagers learned about tobacco prevention Monday morning at the Lake Terrace Convention Center.

Within the state, 1,300, will be informed by the end of the year. However, 69,000 Mississippi teens under 18 will ultimately die prematurely from smoking, according to the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids. Ream more »

Sedalia school board in favor of cigarette tax increase

The Sedalia School District 200 Board of Education voted unanimously on Monday evening in favor of a resolution supporting Proposition B, a statewide ballot initiative that would increase Missouri’s tobacco tax; funds generated by the levy would go to public education.
Along with money for schools, Prop B also would establish a fund aimed at reducing and preventing tobacco use. Ream more »

A plan to offer hookah smoking at a place called Puff Puff Palace went up in smoke Monday night.

Omar Wazwaz has applied for a tobacco license at 408 South Front St. in the heart of the downtown bar district. That alone wouldn’t be an issue. But Wazwaz also wanted to provide what he called “sampling” of hookah products and devices for his customers.

Drop in illegal tobacco sales as latest raid recovers 42,000 cigarettes in Middlesbrough

NEW figures have been released showing another fall in the illegal tobacco market in the North-East.

And the illegal tobacco trade in Middlesbrough has been dealt a major blow following the seizure of a huge haul of cigarettes and tobacco. The swoop on a house in the town led to the recovery of more than 42,000 cigarettes and more than 2.25kg of hand rolling tobacco.

Old habits die hard. In 1996, a majority of California voters approved Prop. 215, which legalized the medicinal use of marijuana. Culturally, the state turned a corner. Among other things, citizens could now turn to a health care alternative they could grow on their own property. Medical marijuana users were no longer to be treated as criminals. But fourteen years later, some people still don’t get it.
