The first analysis of the availability of smart phone apps that promote smoking appeared in the October 23, 2012, issue of the journal Tobacco Control.

A dedicated app search revealed 107 English language pro-smoking apps. “In all, 48 were classed as smoking simulation; 42 as shop/brands; 9 were classed as cigarette battery apps, which depicted a burning cigarette to show the amount of battery left; 6 as background wallpaper; 1 as advocating smoking; and 1 as providing information on roll-ups.”

Voters to decide on medical use of marijuana

Voters will decide on Election Day whether to make Massachusetts the 17th state in the country to allow medical marijuana use for patients meeting certain conditions.

Proponents of Question 3 contend the ballot question and passage of the proposed law would help people suffering from various diseases cope with pain and help those for whom marijuana seems to provide relief. Ream more »

Japan Tobacco Profit Rises on New Products, Quake Recovery

Asia’s largest cigarette maker by market value, reported an 18 percent rise in first-half profit, aided by new domestic products and a recovery from last year’s earthquake.

Net income rose to 168.8 billion yen ($2.1 billion) for the six months ended September, from 143.6 billion yen a year earlier, according to a statement to the Tokyo Stock Exchange yesterday. The company maintained its profit forecast of 318 billion yen for the full year to March 2013. Ream more »

Bihar to launch vigorous drive against tobacco

With more than half of Bihar’s population consuming harmful tobacco and its products, the state government, which imposed a ban on gutka early this year, has decided to launch a vigorous drive against its sale.

“Special squads will be constituted at state and district levels comprising officials from police, health and education to catch people selling or consuming cigarette and tobacco products,” Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi told reporters.

Fire breaks out at Leicester shisha bar

Firefighters worked to prevent flames from spreading to a factory in Leicester on Thursday October 25th after a blaze broke out at a shisha bar on the roof of the building.
According to the Leicester Mercury, the incident occurred at the Cloud 9 cafe atop the Curzonia Knitwear factory on Birstall Street in the St Matthew’s area of the city at around 11.15am. Ream more »

Imperial Tobacco earnings rise eight percent

The British firm, which sells over 340 billion cigarettes annually of brands such as Davidoff, Gauloises, JPS and West, on Tuesday said adjusted earnings rose to 201.0 pence a share for the year to end-September, ahead of a company-compiled consenus of 199.6 pence.

It raised the annual dividend by 11 percent to 105.6 pence a share, boosting its payout ratio from earnings to 52.5 percent. Ream more »

Motsoaledi shrugs off tobacco job loss

THE money and employment benefits of growing tobacco are nothing compared to the damage to human health caused by smoking, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said on Monday.

His comments followed the release by the Tobacco Institute of Southern Africa of a study into the $10bn tobacco value chain in 15 African countries.

Nashville mom testifies in marijuana trial

A Nashville mother of two testified Monday in a federal drug conspiracy case against three men that she was a major supplier to them of about 400 pounds of marijuana a month.

Kejuana McCutcheon said she received boxes containing 20-25 pounds of marijuana, up to about 400 pounds a month, which she sold for more than $300,000 a month.
