Henrico school system going 100 percent smoke-free

The Henrico School Board voted 4-1 Thursday to ban tobacco use on school property at all times. The ban will include athletic events and nighttime meetings at schools.

Smoking and other tobacco use have long been prohibited for students, but the ban now extends to faculty, staff and visitors. The new policy will eliminate designated outdoor smoking areas for staff and visitors.

Resident asks for Silver Creek parks to be smoke-free

The Silver Creek Festival of Grapes is over, but for some the family-friendly experience was ruined by people smoking during the event.

Hanover resident Melissa Shaw attended a recent Silver Creek Village Board meeting to ask if the board would consider making village property and events smoke free.

Montana medical marijuana provider found guilty of drug trafficking

A jury on Thursday convicted a medical marijuana provider of drug trafficking and firearms charges, upholding the U.S. government’s raids of state-regulated pot dispensaries in its first test at trial.

The provider, Chris Williams, was barred by the trial judge from making the case that he and Montana Cannabis followed the state medical marijuana law that voters approved in 2004. Ream more »

Yuba County marijuana dispute turns into brawl

A fight over marijuana ended when a Linda man beat two men with a large tree branch, the Yuba County Sheriff’s Department said Thursday.

Cole L. Younger, 49, was booked into the Yuba County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. He posted a $30,000 bail bond and was released a short time later.

The recent proliferation of hookah shops in Little Egypt might be harmful to children’s health, even if they are just passing by on the sidewalk, parents say.
While some restaurants in “Hookah Central,” on Steinway Street between 25th and 28th avenues, require customers to smoke indoors, other venues have set up chairs in front of entrances, where people enjoy smoking while sipping coffee.

Cigarette Tax Hike Under Consideration To Balance City Budget

Chicago smokers could face even higher cigarette taxes as Mayor Rahm Emanuel tries to balance his proposed 2013 budget.

As WBBM Newsradio Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports, Mayor Emanuel says his new budget will not propose increases in city property taxes, the sales tax, the gas tax, or the amusement tax as some have speculated.

WHO gives full support to Australia’s plain tobacco packaging

The World Health Organization (WHO) continues to stand with Australia as it resists the tobacco industry’s efforts to prevent plain packaging of tobacco products.

“Australia scored a major victory when its highest court recently upheld the country’s novel plain packaging law,” said Dr Shin Young-soo, WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific, during the sixty-third session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Western Pacific. Ream more »

Prescription drug abuse down, but marijuana rising

Once a year, the Federal government conducts a confidential, anonymous survey to detect trends in the nation’s drug use. For 2011, the results are in and they’re what Dr. Peter Delany calls “some mixed results.” Delany is director of the group that organizes the survey, the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment. Davao City poised to regulate electronic cigarettes

The city council has approved a proposal that regulates use of electronic cigarettes and other nicotine-containing products, further strengthening its anti-smoking policy. The measure, which has yet to be signed by Mayor Sara Z. Duterte-Carpio to become an ordinance, is an expanded version of the 2002 anti-smoking law.
