Smoking is about to become a very costly habit in Russia. By 2018, the average pack price is projected to rise to almost 150 rubles ($5) – five times as much as the current price – according to a recent report by the International Tax and Investment Center (ITIC). The report was issued after experts at the center analyzed a new Russian government tax plan. Specialists expect the cost of smoking in Russia to increase on average 150 percent by 2018.

Local teens help smoking rates hit all-time low in NC

A new study suggests a group of local teenagers are winning the fight against some very grown-up political obstacles: tobacco use and state budget cuts.

A recently released survey presented by the state Department of Health and Human Services says the percentage of North Carolina teens who smoke has hit an all-time low this year, down by close to 50 percent over the last decade.

A Hudson Lake man was sentenced to 25 months in federal prison for running a large indoor marijuana growing operation.

Renato DeBartolo must report May 30 to begin serving the sentence that recently was handed down for his conviction for the manufacture of marijuana, according to the U.S. District Court in South Bend. Ream more »

Sul Ross State University has adopted a smoke-free, tobacco-free policy that will take effect June 1. Sul Ross State joins fellow components of the Texas State University System in adopting a smoke-free, tobacco-free environment.
The policy, adopted by the Executive Cabinet, will prohibit the use of tobacco products, including smoke and smokeless tobacco, on premises owned or leased by Sul Ross — including campuses in Alpine, Del Rio, Eagle Pass and Uvalde. Ream more »

To free the workers from vicious circle of tobacco addiction, Surat Diamond Association (SDA) initiated a process, with help from Surat Police and the city’s civic body. The city government declared war on smoking in public places on Thursday, saying it would shut down sheesha cafes, restaurants and hotels that allowed smoking on their premises.

PHL to Thailand: Abide by WTO ruling on cigarette taxes

THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is urging the Thai government to comply with the World Trade Organization (WTO) ruling on cigarettes tax dispute with the Philippines.
