The government in Papua New Guinea is to introduce sweeping measures to outlaw smoking in public places.The new laws are expected to face widespread community opposition in a country where tobacco consumption is a national pastime.

A recent survey found more than 70 percent of households in Papua New Guinea contained at least one smoker, while another study showed more than half of children aged between 13 and 15 smoke. Ream more »

British American Tobacco Sues Over Australia Packaging Law

RoBritish American Tobacco (BAT) is gearing up to take on the Australian government in a High Court challenge against its plan to enforce a plain packaging law for cigarettes. According to AFP, BAT is claiming the legislation violates its intellectual property rights.

The new law, which goes into effect December 1, 2012, would require all tobacco products sold in the country to be packaged in plain, beige wrapping. The packaging would also feature health warnings and disturbing images, such as diseased lungs and sick babies.

I recently attended Pacific Coast Banking School. As part of the program, participants were required to write a management paper. We were able to choose our own topic but it had to relate to either the banking industry or our individual bank. I chose the topic of marijuana legalization and what the potential economic impact to Humboldt County could be if this happens. This is a question that is increasingly being asked by local businesses and residents. ENTREPRENEUR Dr David Xiu has his sights set on supplying the NHS with his creation, the electronic cigarette, which he says could save the public body £440m a year, prevent deaths and rapidly increase the size of his business.

Dr Xiu is managing director and founder of Leeds-based Superdragon Group, which, as well as e-cigarettes, supplies acupuncture needles, herbal and healthcare products. The e-cigarette is a battery-powered device that provides inhaled doses of nicotine by way of a vaporised solution.

‘Prohibition of Smoking and Protection of Non-Smoker Health Law’ was passed by the federal cabinet in 2002. Through this law, smoking was prohibited at all public places, including hotels, restaurants and cafes, and restrictions were placed on tobacco advertising as well as on the sale of tobacco to minors. A resolution against smoking shisha in restaurants and public places was also passed by the Sindh Assembly earlier this year.
